This sermon explores the concept of living as people of light, focusing on the importance of filling our lives with spiritual light from the Bible and eradicating darkness, as guided by various scriptures.
Welcome back to week 3 of our series, “Glow in the Dark.” We have been talking about the biblical concepts of light, darkness, and what it all means in the life of a believer. And today, we are continuing on with this theme by landing on the words of Jesus in the New Testament. Specifically, I want us to look at what we are choosing to take into our bodies and souls which I believe may be the determining factor for whether we share light or darkness with the world around us.
Each of us has a choice in life. We get to choose what goes into our bodies when we are eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a snack. At some point in our lives, we will have to be very particular about what goes in to keep us on the track of healthy living. In a spiritual sense, the Bible says that the principles are the same.
Contrary to popular belief, it matters what we take into our souls. And today, we are going to look at what Jesus says will provide light within ourselves so that we may then share that light with others.
Contrary to popular belief, it matters what we take into our souls.
Jesus makes a key statement up front in this passage, that we are meant to share our light with others. He uses the analogy of a house and a lamp within that house, which gives light to all who enter the house. In a similar sense, we are called to put forth spiritual, Christ-like light for all to see. But there’s a key question Jesus wants us to wrestle with from this passage as well: What are we actually filling ourselves with? Is it real, abundant light? Do we have corners of our life (just like corners of a house) that are still filled with darkness? What’s coming into our lives through our eyes, as Jesus points out? These questions are the ones I want us to work through this morning.
All throughout the Gospel accounts, Jesus is teaching on many different topics, one of which is sin. He is trying to help us learn how to live the best life possible, the abundant life He has come to give us! In His Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, Jesus is talking specifically about the sin of adultery, correcting some misconceptions, when He says this…
Did you catch that keyword? “Look.” Here, Jesus seems to be concerned with where we look. In fact, most of the time when you and I are tempted to turn toward something other than God, it begins with a glance. It’s just a brief glance at that substance or that website. And yet, if we are not careful, over time our glance can turn into a gaze and fixation.
