Summary: Salvation

Many people believe that religion can save them.

Some say, “I belong to a church.”

Others say, “I was baptized,” or “I try to live a good life,” or “I follow religious rules.”

Religion can look good on the outside, but it cannot change the heart.

Religion can teach rules, but it cannot forgive sin.

Religion can guide behavior, but it cannot give eternal life.

The Bible is very clear about this truth: No religion can save us. Only Jesus Christ can save us.

In Acts 4:12, the Bible says,

“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Today, we will look at three simple biblical truths:

1. Religion cannot remove our sin.

2. Good works cannot earn our salvation.

3. Only Jesus Christ can save us.

Imagine a person drowning in the ocean.

Religion is like giving that person swimming lessons while they are already sinking.

Good works are like throwing them a book about swimming.

But Jesus is the one who jumps into the water and pulls them out.

The drowning person does not need information.

They need rescue.

In the same way, sinners do not need more religion.

They need a Savior.

I. RELIGION CANNOT REMOVE OUR SIN

Religion focuses on outward actions, but sin is a heart problem.

The Bible teaches that all people are sinners, no matter how religious they are.

In Romans 3:23, the Bible says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Sin separates us from God.

No amount of prayer, rituals, or traditions can erase sin.

Jesus spoke strongly to religious leaders who looked holy on the outside but were sinful on the inside.

In Matthew 23:27, Jesus said,

“You are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.”

Religion can clean the outside, but only God can clean the heart.

In Isaiah 64:6, the Bible says,

“All our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.”

This means that even our best religious efforts are not enough to remove sin.

II. GOOD WORKS CANNOT EARN OUR SALVATION

Many people believe they will go to heaven because they are “good enough.”

They compare themselves to others and say, “I am not as bad as them.”

But salvation is not a reward for good behavior.

Salvation is a gift from God.

In Ephesians 2:8–9, the Bible says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

If salvation came from good works, people could boast.

But God designed salvation so that all glory goes to Him.

In Titus 3:5, the Bible says,

“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy.”

Good works are important, but they come after salvation, not before it.

Good works are the result of being saved, not the cause of being saved.

III. ONLY JESUS CHRIST CAN SAVE US

Jesus did what religion could never do.

He lived a sinless life.

He died on the cross for our sins.

He rose from the dead in victory.

In John 14:6, Jesus said,

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jesus did not say He was one way among many.

He said He is the way.

In 1 Timothy 2:5, the Bible says, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Jesus is the bridge between sinful people and a holy God.

In Romans 5:8, the Bible says,

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Salvation is not found in religion.

Salvation is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

CONCLUSION

Religion can inform you, but it cannot transform you.

Religion can instruct you, but it cannot save you.

Only Jesus can forgive sin, change the heart, and give eternal life.

The most important question is not, “What religion do you belong to?”

The most important question is, “Do you know Jesus Christ personally?”

In John 1:12, the Bible says,

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

Today, God is not asking you to join a religion.

God is inviting you to trust His Son.

If you have never trusted Jesus as your Savior, you can do so today by faith.

Salvation is not earned.

Salvation is received.

No religion can save us.

Only Jesus Christ can.
