To show that GOD changed our names to CHRISTians as follower of GOD before enemies of GOD we prevail over GOD (in our prayers) and with men.

IV. TEXT:

Genesis 32:28 (Amplified Bible)

And He said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob [supplanter], but Israel [contender with God]; for you have contended and have power with God and with men and have prevailed.

Parallel verse:

Genesis 35:10 (Amplified Bible)

Again God said to him, Your name is Jacob [supplanter]; you shall not be called Jacob any longer, but Israel shall be your name. So He called him Israel [contender with God].

A. You are no longer a deceiver but a ruler with GOD

"And He said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob [supplanter], but Israel [contender with God];"

Jacob or "yaaqob" in Hebrew meaning: heel catcher, supplanter or in some cases, a deceiver. Israel or "yisrael" in Hebrew meaning: he will rule as GOD, contender with GOD. Contender (according to Webster's dictionary) - one who contends, a combatant, a champion.

Deceiver (according to Webster's dictionary) - one who deceives, one who leads into error, a cheat, an impostor.

Some of the people that got their names changed by GOD:

1. Abram changed to Abrahame

Genesis 17:5 (Amplified Bible)

Nor shall your name any longer be Abram [high, exalted father]; but your name shall be Abraham [father of a multitude], for I have made you the father of many nations.

2. Jacob changed to Israel

Genesis 35:10 (Amplified Bible)

Again God said to him, Your name is Jacob [supplanter]; you shall not be called Jacob any longer, but Israel shall be your name. So He called him Israel [contender with God].

3. Hoshea changed to Joshua

Numbers 13:16 (Amplified Bible)

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore and scout out the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun, Joshua.

4. Jedidiah changed to Solomon

Name changing marks that the person has encountered GOD. A change of direction and a change of purpose brought about by interaction with GOD. Every day we talk to GOD we are changed from glory to glory. We are all new creation that have trusted GOD, JESUS, as our LORD and SAVIOR.

Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!
