NIGERIA OUTREACH 2022

May 22-25, 2022

POWERPOINT & COMMENTS

SLIDE 1 – “AFRICA AND OYO STATE”

SLIDE 2 – “My Destination: Fountain of Peace Baptist Church in Oyo

Inset: Pastor John Oyelade”

SLIDE 3 – “The Roads are Bustling with People.” In cities, most people walk where they’re going. In Oyo the predominant mode of travel is motorcycles. Cars are out of people’s price range. Motorcycles are cheaper and go a long distance on one gallon of gasoline.

SLIDE 4 – “Typical Streets in Nigeria.’ When you drive on American roads, usually you see only cars, with an occasional motorcycle. People stay off the streets. Not so in Nigeria. In cities, pedestrians routinely walk or cross the roads even in heavy traffic. Venders walk between the lanes of cars selling everything from chickens to radios. So driving is more like swimming across a river, than floating down one.

SLIDE 5 – “IT’S A CHALLENGE TO DRIVE IN NIGERIA.” There are few or no stop signs or lights. Police rarely direct traffic. I didn’t see anyone arrested for going too fast or driving on the wrong side of the road. Everyone tries to bluff their way through intersections. The aggressive drivers let others know they’re coming by blowing their horns. One of our taxi drivers drove 85 mph for over 3 hours, blowing his horn and looking like he’d crash into anybody who got in his way, so everyone got out of his way. Pastor Stephen said, “I don’t think I could drive in Nigeria anymore!” (He’d been in America too long with our submissive drivers and rules!)

SLIDE 6 – “MOST STREETS ARE LINED WITH MAKESHIFT

VENDERS.” Nigerians are entrepreneurs. Few jobs and poverty drive them to attempt to find an alternate way to make a living.

SLIDE 7 – “Nigerians are very industrious – everywhere there’s a spot, they open a store.” They are very friendly, joyful and kind people.

SLIDE 8 – “THERE ARE MANY MODES OF TRAVEL” - Motorcycle Taxis and Mini Taxis. I saw at least 3 motorcycles that had 4 adults on the same motorcycle. The mini taxis are similar to golf carts, but only have one wheel on the front, making them more maneuverable in traffic – they can turn on a dime & probably have great gas mileage.

SLIDE 9 – “Van People Transport & Open Trucks.” The van transports are very popular, but must be uncomfortable since they have 4 people on every seat. I was told people bring their chickens and goats with them on the transports. Usually they have the back doors open with bundles of goods swelling out, tied on with ropes. Many trucks also carry passengers – for a small fee. So you commonly see passengers on top of great loads in trucks.

SLIDE 10 – “Familiar scenes on the road: Overloaded Vehicles & Drivers driving the Wrong Way.” It amazed me that some of the vans could be driven with such great loads on them! Drivers going the wrong way in traffic is part of getting to where they need to go when their lanes are blocked with traffic, or they’re taking a short-cut.

SLIDE 11 – “Children Start Working Early alongside their Parents.” This little girl was on the road to the church. We saw her every day sewing, so we stopped and got her picture. She might be 10 or 11.

SLIDE 12 – “The Choir performs.” Here is a video of the choir singing. Though not professionals, they certainly exhibit the joy of the Lord and love for God. They sang for hours on end; usually an hour when church started, then another hour before it closed. They were full of God’s Spirit and anointed to their ministry of praise! The services were enhanced by the wonderful choir!

SLIDE 13 – THEME: REBUILDING THE WALLS; NEH. 2:17. While in Oyo, I preached seven messages. Five were for the congregation, and two for minister’s meetings. The first five were (all are on SermonCentral):

1. “5 Smooth Stones” – subject - Spiritual Warfare

2. “Spiritual Success Comes in Cans” – Faith

3. “The Rapture – Are you Ready?” – Expectation.

4. “Close to the Kingdom” – Divine Healing.

[I got about 75 people to come to the front – ministers, prayer

warriors, S.S. teachers, deacons, etc. The pastor and I anointed

their hands with oil. We dedicated their hands to be Jesus’s hands

extended. Then we went section by section, having all who wanted

prayer for healing to come be prayed for. We had them say “Jesus,

take my sins away and please heal my body.” Then we had the

prayer band raise their hands and say, “In Jesus name, Receive

your healing” and then lay their hands on them & pray for about 2

minutes. Then we asked them to try something they couldn’t do
