NEVER THE LESS, I WILL AT THY WORD!
Luke 5:1-11 (KJV) 1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
In this sermon outline we find that sometimes even if our head knowledge says no to the task before us, we take God at His Word and Promises. Romans 8:31 (KJV) What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? We then can say with Paul in Philippians 4:13 (KJV) I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
I. Jesus borrows the boat.
A. God wants to use what we have, even if is small.
1. Does God need our tithe and offerings?
a. He wants to multiply what we have.
b. Give and it shall be given unto you.
c. The disciples want to catch fish. They gave and we will see they received abundance.
B. What does Jesus do first with the boat?
1. He preaches from it. He gives out the Word.
Romans 10:17 (KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
II. After Jesus preached the Word, He told them to 'LAUNCH OUT'.
A. Sometimes we have to do something different.
B. Peter may have thought, Lord, you are a good preacher, but you do not catch fish in a net in broad daylight. You do it at night when they cannot see the net and get caught in it.
C. The impossible becomes possible when God is in it.
1. God's way is always the best way.
III. Then even the greater test, cast out the net.
A. This may have seen foolish but they had to put faith in action.
1. We do this when we act on God's Word and do what He says to do.
2. The devil will lie to us and say it is foolish to ask, believe and put our faith into action.
IV. What happened when they took Jesus "AT HIS WORD'?
A. A great harvest was theirs.
1. Never had they caught so many fish.
2. Obeying God can bring a harvest.
3. Their vision was changed.
a. It was enlarged. They became fishers of men.
V. Take God at His Word and see what can happen!
A. You can become a new person. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
B. All things are possible. Mark 9:23 (KJV) Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
C. He can save, heal and deliver today. 1 Peter 2:24 (KJV) Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Remember Luke 6:38 (KJV) Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
This is a principle in the Kingdom of God. The disciples acted on Jesus Words and had a harvest. Act on God's Word and you can be saved, blessed, healed and have your life changed.
