Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Explore and understand God's unexpected, sufficient, and unconditional provision.
Good morning, everyone! I'm so thankful we've gathered together today to dig into God's Word and discover new truths about His unfailing love and provision for us.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning once said, "God's gifts put man's best dreams to shame." That quote perfectly captures our discussion today because we're going to explore how God's provision is unexpected, sufficient, and unconditional.
Let's read from the book of Exodus, chapter 16, verses 2 - 15:
In the passage we just read, the Israelites found themselves in a predicament that seemed impossible to overcome. They were in the desert, a barren place with no visible source of sustenance. Their human understanding could not comprehend how they would survive in such a place. They grumbled against Moses and Aaron, blaming them for their dire situation. But God, in His infinite wisdom and power, had a plan. He promised to rain down bread from heaven for them. This was an unexpected provision, something they could not have imagined or planned for.
Often the case with God's provision in our lives: We find ourselves in situations where we can't see a way out. We look around and all we see is lack. We grumble and complain, sometimes blaming others for our predicament. But God, who sees the end from the beginning, has a plan. He provides in ways we could never have imagined. His provision is unexpected.
Not always miraculous or supernatural: Sometimes, His provision comes through natural means, but it's still unexpected. For instance, you might be struggling financially, and out of the blue, you receive a job offer or a promotion. Or you might be lonely, and suddenly, you meet someone who becomes a dear friend. These are examples of God's unexpected provision.
More than meeting our physical needs: He also provides for our emotional and spiritual needs. For example, you might be going through a difficult time emotionally, and God provides comfort and peace that surpasses all understanding. Or you might be struggling spiritually, and God provides a fresh revelation of His love and grace that renews your faith.
Teaches us to depend on Him: We should not depend on our understanding or abilities. When the Israelites were in the desert, they had to rely on God for their daily bread. They couldn't store up for the future; they had to trust that God would provide for them each day. This taught them to depend on God and not on their own efforts or resources.
Reveals His character: It shows us that He is a loving and caring Father who knows our needs and provides for us. It shows us that He is a powerful God who can do the impossible. It shows us that He is a faithful God who keeps His promises.
He is with us, even in the most difficult situations: When the Israelites were in the desert, they might have felt abandoned and forgotten. But God was with them, providing for them each day. His provision was a tangible reminder of His presence and care.
Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about a time when God provided for you in an unexpected way. How did this affect your life and your faith?
When we speak of God's provision being sufficient, we're talking about the adequacy of what God provides ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
