Summary: Isaiah describes a bed too short to stretch out on and a blanket too narrow to keep warm (Isaiah 28:20). It is God’s picture of false security—things that appear sufficient until we try to rest in them.

NARROW BED & SHORT BLANKET

A warning God built right into everyday life

PROLOGUE

A long time ago, I accompanied my oldest son on a “Father Son” camping expedition. That night, a cold wind blew and it came in under the edges of our tent and down the neck of my sleeping bag. Needless to say, I spent a miserable night. Have you ever spent a sleepless night, tossing and turning, because, try as you may, you couldn’t get comfortable?

Isaiah gives us one of the most painfully practical illustrations in all of Scripture:

SCRIPTURE READING

“For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it:

and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.”

Isaiah 28:20

I.) WHAT GOD IS SAYING (IN PLAIN TERMS)

God doesn’t argue philosophy here.

He points to a bad night’s sleep.

You can lie down—but you can’t stretch out.

You can pull up the blanket—but you can’t get warm.

Everything looks like it should work…

until you actually try to live in it.

This is God’s verdict on human-made solutions to spiritual problems.

II.) “THE BED YOU SLEEP IN” — A MESSAGE GOD BUILT INTO THE NIGHT

“He giveth His beloved sleep.”

Psalms 127:2

Sleep, according to Scripture, is not automatic.

It is not merely biology, chemistry, or exhaustion.

The Bible presents sleep as a gift—something given by God, not seized by man.

That truth alone should sober us.

If God gives sleep, then restlessness is often a spiritual signal.

III.) WHAT SCRIPTURE SAYS IS NECESSARY FOR SLEEP

Before God ever speaks of a short bed or a narrow blanket, Scripture quietly lays out what true rest requires.

1. SAFETY — Freedom From Fear

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8

Sleep requires the removal of threat.

God promises dwelling safety—not just momentary protection, but settled security.

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night.”

Psalm 91:5

When fear rules, sleep flees.

2. COMFORT — Warmth and Human Dignity

God’s law even protected sleep from cruelty:

“If thou at all take thy neighbour’s raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down:

For that is his covering only… wherein shall he sleep?”

Exodus 22:26–27

God cares whether a man can sleep warm.

Justice, mercy, and compassion are woven into rest itself.

A society that ignores comfort for the vulnerable

creates a nation of sleepless souls.

3. PEACE OF MIND — A Quiet Conscience

“The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.”

Isaiah 32:17

Peace is not denial.

Peace is the fruit of alignment with God.

Guilt keeps the eyes open long after the lights go out.

4. HONEST FATIGUE — The Blessing of Labor

“The sleep of a labouring man is sweet.”

Ecclesiastes 5:12

God designed work to prepare the body and soul for rest.

Ease without purpose produces exhaustion without sleep.

IV.) NOW GOD’S ILLUSTRATION: THE BED AND THE BLANKET

Against this backdrop, God speaks with surgical precision:

“For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it:

and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.”

Isaiah 28:20

This is not poetry for poetry’s sake.

It is a verdict.

Judah had:

• political alliances instead of repentance (Isaiah 28:15)

• religion without obedience

• confidence without righteousness

They thought they were secure.

God says: “Try resting in it.”

V.) WHY THE METAPHOR WORKS — From God’s Perspective

Sleep reveals what standing can hide.

You can pretend while awake.

You can perform in daylight.

But when you lie down:

• fear stretches out its legs

• guilt pulls at the covers

• eternity presses close

A false refuge always fails at night.

A short bed = a worldview that can’t carry the full weight of life

A narrow blanket = a substitute salvation that won’t cover sin, death, or judgment

God is saying:

“What you built cannot sustain the human soul.”

VI.) THE MODERN SAYING — And God’s Deeper Meaning

We say:

“You made your bed, now you have to lie in it.”

God said it first—just more mercifully.

Isaiah 28 shows that false trust always produces restless nights.

But the warning comes before the final laying down.

God lets us feel the discomfort now

so we won’t lie down forever in the wrong place.

VII.) THE BED THAT FITS

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

Christ offers:

• a bed long enough for repentance

• a blanket wide enough for grace
