My Bible & Me
How To Make The Bible An Important Part Of My Life
Psalm 119
1. I must Accept The Bible as the Word of God.
A. David accepted the Scripture as God’s Word.
·(Psa 119:1) … the law of the LORD.
·(Psa 119:2) … keep his testimonies,
·(Psa 119:3) … walk in his ways.
·(Psa 119:4) … keep thy precepts diligently.
·(Psa 119:5) … keep thy statutes!
·(Psa 119:6) … have respect unto all thy commandments.
·(Psa 119:7) … learned thy righteous judgments.
·(Psa 119:8) … keep thy statutes:
B. David believed that the Word of God was …
·… verbally inspired - (Psa 119:13) With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.
·… inerrant - (Psa 119:128) and because I consider all your precepts right, I hate every wrong path.
·…absolutely trustworthy - (Psa 119:86) All your commands are trustworthy; help me, for men persecute me without cause.
C. David believed that God’s Word reveals His character.
·(Psa 119:7) I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws.
·(Psa 119:39) Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good.
·(Psa 119:43) Do not snatch the word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws.
·(Psa 119:140) Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.
D. David responded to the Word of God just as he would respond to God Himself.
·Respect - (Psa 119:6) Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.
·Trust - (Psa 119:42) then I will answer the one who taunts me, for I trust in your word.
·Seek - (Psa 119:45) I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.
·Love - (Psa 119:47) for I delight in your commands because I love them.
·Hope - (Psa 119:81) My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word.
2. I must Approach the Bible as my Divine Law Book for living.
{Every verse but three [vv. 121, 122, 132] refers to the Scripture in one of the following ways:}
A. Law = “Rule of conduct” -
(Psa 119:34) Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart
B. Testimonies = Bears witness to our sinfulness & God’s love –
(Psa 119:22) Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies
C. Way = Gives a rule of conduct in which we are to walk –
(Psa 119:37) Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.
D. Precepts = A responsibility entrusted to us for which we will give an account –
(Psa 119:40) Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.
E. Statutes = A definite, prescribed, written law –
(Psa 119:16) I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.
F. Commandments = Something commanded & expected to be observed –
(Psa 119:21) Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments
G. Judgments = Judicial decisions legally binding –
(Psa 119:20) My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times
H. Word = Sayings expressing the mind of God –
(Psa 119:28) My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.
I. Truth = Completely trustworthy & reliable –
(Psa 119:43) And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments
J. Ordinances = Authoritative decrees –
(Psa 119:91) They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants
3. I must Acknowledge the purpose for which God gave me my Bible.
{To influence, change, regulate & control every area of my life}
A. It is a Path to keep me straight. –
(Psa 119:1) Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD
B. It is Water to make me clean. –
(Psa 119:9) Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
C. It is a Song to make me joyful. –
(Psa 119:54) Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage
D. It is Gold to make me rich. –
(Psa 119:72) The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
E. It is Food to make me strong. -
(Psa 119:103) How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
F. It is Light to make me sure. –
(Psa 119:105) Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
