Explore and understand the mission God has given us, as outlined in Matthew 28:18-20, and how we can live it out daily in our lives.

Introduction

Good morning, family. Today, we're going to dig deep into a well-known passage of Scripture that outlines the very mission God has for us, His beloved creation. We're going to discover that though times have changed, the commission remains the same. And we'll also talk about how we can fulfill our mission in this lifetime.

Rick Warren writes, "God is at work in the world, and He wants you to join Him. This assignment is called your mission. God wants you to have both a ministry in the Body of Christ and a mission in the world." In essence, our mission from God isn't just something to acknowledge, it's something to live out daily.

So let's look at the Scripture that sets our course, Matthew 28:18-20,

"And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.'"

God's Mission for Mankind

The mission God has for mankind is not a secret; it is clearly stated in the passage we read. Jesus, having been given all authority in heaven and on earth, commissioned His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. This is not a command given only to the disciples who were present at that time. It is a command that transcends time and space, a command given to all believers, to all of us. This is our mission: to make disciples of all nations.

What does it mean to make disciples?: A disciple, in the simplest terms, is a follower, a student. To make disciples, then, means to lead others to follow Jesus, to teach them His ways, and to guide them in living out His teachings. This is not a task to be taken lightly. It requires dedication, commitment, and a deep understanding of God's Word. It requires us to live out our faith, to be examples of Christ's love and grace, and to share the Good News of salvation with others.

Not limited to pastors, missionaries, or church leaders: It is a mission for every believer. Each of us has a role to play in fulfilling this mission. We are all called to share the Gospel, to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. This can be done in various ways. It can be through our words, through our actions, or through our lifestyle. It can be done in our homes, in our workplaces, in our communities, or even in far-off places. The important thing is that we are obedient to the command to make disciples.

It’s about teaching and nurturing: Not just about evangelism Jesus did not only say, "Go and make disciples." He also said, "Teaching them to observe all that I commanded you." This means that our mission also involves helping others grow in their faith, guiding them in their spiritual journey, and equipping them to become disciple-makers as well.

A great privilege. It is a privilege to be used by God to bring others to Him. It is a privilege to be part of His work in the world. And it is a privilege to know that we are not alone in this mission. Jesus promised, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." He is with us as we fulfill our mission. He is with us as we make disciples. He is with us as we teach and nurture. And He is with us as we face challenges and difficulties. With Him, we can fulfill our mission.

Not always easy: It requires sacrifice, perseverance, and courage. It requires us to step out of our comfort zones, to face rejection and opposition, and to keep going even when the going gets tough. But the rewards are worth it. The joy of seeing others come to know Jesus, the satisfaction of seeing them grow in their faith, and the hope of seeing them become disciple-makers themselves are rewards that far outweigh any difficulties we may face.
