Mighty God

Christmas 2006 Series

December 10, 2006 AM

Last week we began on a journey discovering the meanings of the names of the Messiah as listed in Isaiah 9:6 with “Wonderful, Counselor.” Wonderful – meaning miraculous, full or wonder and counselor being our advisor. Today, we continue our study of the Names as we venture to the second name, which is “Mighty God.” One specific thought this morning for us to feast upon, “Is Jesus the Mighty God of your life?”

TEXT (9:6)

I. Mighty God –derived from gibbor (ghib-bore’)

a. Mighty defined:

i. “He is our mighty hero”

ii. POWERFUL

iii. “Strength of God, Strong God, Divine Hero”

iv. Name is used to remind people of God’s strength

v. Champion/Mighty Warrior

How is the Messiah “Mighty” for you and I?

• Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and Man

o How? He died on the cross for our sins and our shortcomings

o 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; - 1 Timothy 2:5

o See Hebrews 12:24-25

 He is our go-between!

• Jesus Christ is our Savior

o How do I know? A few examples from Scripture.

o 14Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:14

o Text today

o And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and of truth – John 1:14

o He died on the cross, shed His blood so that we might have life and have it more abundantly.

o John 14:6 – I am the way, the truth and, the life – no man can enter into Heaven except by me.

o John 20:24-31

• It’s all a matter of Faith! – Believing in something that you and I cannot see

Hebrews 11:1

How has the Messiah proven to be Mighty God?

Pastor Spurgeon is quoted:

This Child born, this Son given, came into the world to enter the lists against sin. For thirty years and upwards He had to struggle against temptations more numerous and terrible than man had ever known before. And yet, without sin or taint of sin, more than conqueror He stood. We know also that Christ proved Himself to be "the mighty God" from the fact that at last all the sins of all His people were gathered upon His shoulders, and "He bare them in His own body on the tree." But He did more than this -- when He led captivity captive, add crushed death and ground his iron limbs to powder, He proved Himself then the mighty God. Oh, my soul, thou canst say that He has proved Himself in thy heart to be a mighty God. I beg and beseech of you all, come add put your trust in Jesus Christ; He is the mighty God.

• He has conquered sin, Satan, and the world – what more can we ask?

How can we see the might of God in our lives today?

1. A Mighty God has come to give you His strength to move mountains in your life!

a. Mountains: anything that comes in between you and the Great Commission and the Great Commandment of Jesus Christ

i. Examples: Lack of Faith, Lack of Prayer, Lack of Study, Gossiping or Listening to Gossip, Disobedience, Selfishness, Unforgiveness, Lying, Finances, Unemployment, Illness, Death, and even Christmas.

Isaiah 11:1-5 (NASB)

Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Abd He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the brath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.

This is sure power – all of it in our Mighty God, the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Do you want to have the greatest Christmas you’ve ever had? Give you all to the Mighty God. Allow Him to give you the strength to remove the mountains that are hindering you from being all that you can be for Him.

2. A Mighty God has come to show the world He has no limitations!

a. Mark 5:21-43

i. Story of a desperate father names Jairus and his dying 12 yr. old daughter. On the way to the home, everything goes wrong – they are told that she has already died – Jesus said – just believe, keep going. When they get there, it is a crazy scene, people weeping, screaming, etc. Jesus said, she’s not dead, she’s just sleeping.
