2024.05.26 Sermon Notes. Memorial Day. One Gave All for us all

William Akehurst, HSWC

BIG IDEA: Living HE loved me, dying HE saved me, buried HE carried my sins far away, rising HE justified, freely forever, One Day HE’s coming, oh glorious day!

Memorial Day, we remember those who gave their lives for our freedom.

FREEDOM! (ref. Braveheart)

Some of JESUS’ Final Words on the Cross, FATHER FORGIVE THEM…FATHER FREE THEM…FATHER, FREEDOM!

Memorial Day, we remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. Our world has been at war somewhere for all of time, with fighting for freedom and differences. There is a right and wrong side to both parties. Conflict is everywhere. We celebrate those who fought for our freedom and ideologies. But, are we always right?

We rise up for freedom for our own people and for the rights of others.

I am reminded of the freedom speech by William Wallace in Braveheart, and his final word at his death, crying out FREEDOM.

We all desire freedom, from war, oppression, conflict, etc. But what is the real root of freedom?

Peace. Freedom comes through Peace.

Peace. Ultimately, our desire is for peace. And THAT PEACE comes from the LOVE of GOD towards all mankind.

Our Spiritual Freedom comes through Peace, and Peace comes from the LOVE FATHER GOD, through JESUS, by HOLY SPIRIT.

Peace, Freedom, Love

John 14:25-27 (NKJV)

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Peace. Ultimately, our desire is for peace, but to receive that peace, goes back to the Greatest Commandments. Love the LORD YOUR GOD, Love your neighbor as yourself.

Hymn #41 One Day, J. Wilbur Chapman

1. One day when Heaven was filled with His praises,

One day when sin was as black as could be,

Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin,

Dwelt among men, my example is He!

• Refrain:

Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me;

Buried, He carried my sins far away;

Rising, He justified freely forever;

One day He’s coming—oh, glorious day!

2. One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain,

One day they nailed Him to die on the tree;

Suffering anguish, despised and rejected:

Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He!

3. One day they left Him alone in the garden,

One day He rested, from suffering free;

Angels came down o’er His tomb to keep vigil;

Hope of the hopeless, my Savior is He!

4. One day the grave could conceal Him no longer,

One day the stone rolled away from the door;

Then He arose, over death He had conquered;

Now is ascended, my Lord evermore!

5. One day the trumpet will sound for His coming,

One day the skies with His glories will shine;

Wonderful day, my beloved ones bringing;

Glorious Savior, this Jesus is mine!

That day will be glorious, when JESUS comes for the Church.

Revelation 22:12-13 (NKJV) 12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”

When JESUS described HIS coming as “quickly”. We misunderstand in relation to time. There were many prophetic sayings that had to be fulfilled and finalized. If we think of quickly as “Suddenly”, it makes more sense. As in, the twinkling of an eye, or as a “thief in the night”. Quickly, without warning. Although we have been given the warning signs and must heed the call of HOLY SPIRIT to turn our hearts to the LORD.

I heard it explained this way. Time is short. The puzzle pieces are all coming together and the picture is coming together with the few remaining pieces to be placed on the board.

The charge (dynamite) has been set, the fuse laid, and there’s a guy standing just 5 feet away, ready for word to strike the match.

Its time now to be ready and at Peace with GOD.

John 3:16 (KJV)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
