Explore five simple yet effective principles for mastering time management. These include setting clear priorities, nurturing relationships, planning ahead, organizing effectively, and embracing flexibility.

Introduction

Think about the biggest stressors in your life right now. Chances are, they involve feeling overwhelmed with responsibilities at home, work, school, church, or a combination of these. The constant ticking of the clock can make it seem like time is our enemy, always running out. The solution to this stress lies in effective time management. Today, we will explore five key principles of time management that can help you navigate overwhelming situations and make the most of your time.

Principle 1: Set Priorities

To effectively manage your time, you must set priorities. Imagine a physics teacher giving students a wide-mouth mason jar and five big rocks, marbles, sand, and water. The challenge is to fit all these items into the jar in just fifteen seconds. The teacher demonstrates that by placing the big rocks first, followed by the marbles, sand, and water, everything fits perfectly. Jesus also emphasized setting priorities when He said, "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33, NIV). Prioritizing our relationship with God is essential.

Principle 2: Build Relationships

Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40, NIV). These two relationships are crucial. Material possessions may fade away, but relationships endure. Investing time in building a relationship with God and nurturing relationships with others is of utmost importance.

Principle 3: Take Time to Plan

Planning is vital for effective time management. Jesus spoke about planning when He mentioned counting the cost before building a tower (Luke 14:28-30, NIV). Planning allows us to prepare for future events and allocate our time wisely. Whether it's planning sermons, family activities, or personal goals, taking the time to plan helps us make the most of our time.

Principle 4: Take Time to Organize

How much time do we waste searching for misplaced items? Being organized can save us valuable time. Jesus shared the parable of a woman searching for a lost coin, emphasizing the importance of finding what is lost (Luke 15:8-10, NIV). By organizing our belongings, labeling things, and grouping similar items together, we can avoid wasting time searching for misplaced things.

Principle 5: Learn to Be Flexible

No matter how well we plan and organize, unexpected events can disrupt our schedules. Being flexible is crucial in adapting to these changes. Jesus highlighted the importance of flexibility when He said, "Blessed are the flexible, for they will not be broken" (adapted from an existing beatitude). We must remember that God is ultimately in control of our lives and plans.

Conclusion

Time management requires intentional effort and work. By setting priorities, building relationships, planning, organizing, and remaining flexible, we can effectively manage our time. However, we must always remember that our time on earth is limited. Just as Jesus warned in the parable of the rich fool, accumulating wealth and possessions without prioritizing our relationship with God is ultimately futile (Luke 12:20-21, NIV). Let us strive to manage our time wisely, investing in what truly matters and seeking God's guidance in all our endeavors.
