Summary: Mary didn't know many things, but Mary did know her hope was in God.

Luke 1:26-38 What Mary Knew

1. Almost 40 years ago, songwriter Mark Lowry scribbled down some lyrics for a Christmas song about Mary, the mother of Jesus.

• The song ask many questions Mary, did you know

That your baby boy will one day walk on water?Mary, did you know

That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?Did you know

That your baby boy has come to make you new?This child that you’ve delivered

Will soon deliver you? No, Mary didn’t know.

2. What do we know about Mary?

• She was a young girl, probably mid-teens. She was engaged to joseph,

• She was a virgin, after Gabriel had told her about the pregnancy Mary said, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” (v. 34).We know Mary found favor with God

• Mary was probably in great fear her betrothed to be husband Joseph was inclined “to dismiss her quietly” rather than “expose her to public disgrace” (Matthew 1:19).

3. Mary Didn’t Know What Was Going On Sometimes, we don’t either.

• This describes Mary as she listens to Gabriel.All she knew was that an angel just told her she was going to have a baby. She didn’t know why. She certainly didn’t know how since, as she told Gabriel, she’d never slept with anyone.

• We ask ourselves, “How long am I going to be working at this dead-end job?” Or, “Why am I still in this relationship?” Or, “When am I going to figure out what to do with my life?” like Mary, we’re clueless.

4. Mary Didn’t Know That She Was “Favored” Sometimes we forget this, too.

• Verse 48 reminds us of her favored status: “For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.”

• Mary was chosen for this role from among scores of other possible candidates.

• One commentator said, “Mary did have a heart that was inclined toward God. She was a girl with a remarkable willingness to risk everything, even her life, to comply with the will of God. “Here am I, the servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word,” she said (v. 38).

• Mary is not favored because of her perfection or unwavering faith, but rather because of the faithfulness of God. She is invited into God’s plan not because of her achievements, status or goodness, but rather because God chose to lift up the lowly (Luke 1:52).

5. Mary Didn’t Know How She Was Going to Suffer

• from this point on, her house her life would be a mess; her son was wow he knew everthing

• there would be an endless stream of questions and, even worse, answers;

• things wouldn’t always go according to plan; she’d have trouble bonding with this child;

• from this day forward, she would worry constantly;

• Yes, Mary suffered. She didn’t know what it would be like raising a gifted and talented boy.

• She witnessed the questioning of her son, the good works, the miracles, the rejecting, the beating the crucifixion she witnessed what no mother should witness

6. Mary Knew She was a servant of The lord

• The Bible says, Mary pondered these things in her heart she had deep insight into what God was doing in her.

• Mary’s Faith in God was deep, Mary knew she could trust God

• Mary said, in verse 49 That God had done great things for her “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”
