“Mary Did Know”

Luke 1:26-38

There is a popular song “Mary Did You Know” that is sung this time of year.

Lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music written by Buddy Greene in 1991.

It is very catchy and sounds nice, but there is a problem… It does not fit the Bible.

I am not here to bash anyone but to point out what the Bible says.

Let’s open our text.

I. The Revealing

Luke 1:26-27 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

And in the sixth month - After Elisabeth's conception

Luke 1:23

Gabriel - "warrior of God" the messenger of God sent to Daniel, to Zacharias, and to Mary

Nazareth - "the guarded one" We get Nazarite = consecrated or devoted one.

Matthew 2:23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

Jesus; who was descended from Jesse's family, so by dwelling at Nazareth, he would appear to be, and would be "called a Nazarene, the branch"; being an inhabitant of Natzareth,

John 1:46 “And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.”

To a virgin - A pure virgin, that never knew man

This is a conflict with many other perversions which call Mary a young girl

Espoused - to be promised in marriage, be betrothed

This was a term that was used as a couple made a vow to each other and yet have not been married but promised to each other.

II. The Revelation

Luke 1:28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Hail - to rejoice, be glad, in salutations,

Highly favoured - to peruse with grace, compass with favour

Blessed - favoured of God,

We see this introduction as a very special time that would cause Mary to react.

III. The Reaction

Luke 1:29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

Troubled - to render anxious or distressed, to perplex the mind of one by suggesting doubts

Words that have never been heard before are now causing Mary to question; “What could this mean.”

IV. A Response

Luke 1:30-33 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Fear not - to be struck with fear, to be seized with alarm

63 times this is used in the Bible and each time it is a positive message that followed by a message of encouragement.

1. Thou shalt conceive in thy womb,

2. And bring forth a son,

3. And shalt call his name JESUS.

4. He shall be great,

5. And shall be called the Son of the Highest:

6. And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

7. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever;

8. And of his kingdom there shall be no end.

V. The Rebuttal

Luke 1:34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

This is not normal since Mary had never been with a man (that is why she is called a virgin).

VI. The Reply

Luke 1:35-37 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

The answer is GOD! “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:”

1. That holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

2. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her
