Explores Revelation 13, seeking understanding and discernment about the prophesied beast, the advent of a cashless economy, and the implications of bearing the mark.
Good morning, beloved friends. I'm so glad you've chosen to join us today as we gather in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I trust that His grace has been sufficient for you throughout the week and that His peace has been your constant companion.
Today, we're going to turn our attention to a passage of Scripture that has been a source of intrigue and speculation for many, a passage that has stirred the hearts and minds of believers for centuries. It's a passage that paints a vivid picture of a future event, a prophecy yet to be fulfilled. We find this passage in the book of Revelation, chapter 13, verses 1 through 18.
The apostle John writes, "And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
The beast is described as having seven heads and ten horns, with ten crowns upon its horns. These details are not random or insignificant. In biblical symbolism, heads often represent authority or rule, while horns symbolize power. The number seven is often associated with completeness or perfection in the Bible, and the number ten signifies completeness or totality as well. The crowns on the horns indicate that this beast has been given authority and power over all the earth.
The description of the beast continues, painting a picture of a creature that is part leopard, part bear, and part lion. These animals are all predators, creatures of strength and ferocity. This suggests that the beast will be a powerful and fearsome entity, one that commands respect and incites fear. The dragon, representing Satan, gives the beast his power and authority, indicating that the beast will be a tool of the devil, used to deceive and lead astray.
The beast is also said to have a fatal wound that was healed. This could be a reference to a future event where a world leader or system seems to be destroyed but then miraculously recovers, causing the world to marvel and follow after the beast. This could also be a counterfeit resurrection, mirroring the death and resurrection of Christ, and further deceiving the people of the earth.
The beast is given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies. This suggests that the beast will be a figure of great influence, one who speaks against God and leads others to do the same. The beast is also given power to wage war against God's holy people and to conquer them. This indicates a time of great persecution for believers, a time when faith will be tested like never before.
The beast is worshipped by all who dwell on the earth, all whose names are not written in the book of life. This suggests that the beast will be a figure of great popularity and adoration, one who is followed and revered by many. Those who refuse to worship the beast will be ostracized and persecuted, further testing the faith and endurance of believers.
Finally, the beast is associated with the number 666, a number that has been the subject of much speculation and debate. Some believe this number represents a specific person, while others believe it represents a system or government. Regardless of its exact meaning, the number 666 is a symbol of the beast's opposition to God, a mark of his rebellion and defiance.
In all these details, we see a picture of a future time of great deception and persecution, a time when a powerful and influential figure, empowered by Satan, will lead many astray. But we also see a call to discernment and faithfulness, a call to stand firm in our faith and resist the allure of the beast. As believers, we are called to be watchful and discerning, to test everything against the truth of God's Word, and to hold fast to our faith in the face of opposition and persecution.
