I. EXORDIUM:

Acknowledge GOD in everything you do.

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

To remind to stop our good works not prompted by grace.

IV. TEXT:

Joshua 5:12 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

No manna appeared on the day they first ate from the crops of the land, and it was never seen again. So from that time on the Israelites ate from the crops of Canaan.

V. THESIS:

Work for grace not against it.

VI. TITLE:

Manna Versus Canaan's Food

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: uncertain probable Joshua

B. Leading Topic: Conquest and division of the land of Canaan

C. Key Thought: How to be successful in the battles of life?

Joshua 1:8-9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. When they ate food from the earth, it stopped food from heaven. (1 Peter 1:18, John 6:27, John 6:55)

1 Peter 1:18 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver.

John 6:27 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”

John 6:55 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

1. Doing it our own way stops GOD from helping us. Since earth has been cursed after Adam and Eve disobeyed GOD and ate the forbidden fruit, from then on, everything coming from the earth has the curse and also it's fruit, manna does not contain the curse because it came from GOD. Start spending our energy on invisible things (spiritual things) for GOD.

B. They forgot to offer the first fruit to GOD. (Exodus 23:19, Romans 8:23, 1 Corinthians 15:23)

Exodus 23:19 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“As you harvest your crops, bring the very best of the first harvest to the house of the Lord your God. “You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

Romans 8:23 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.

1 Corinthians 15:23 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back.

1. When Joshua was scrutinized under the law, he fulfilled it all but if scrutinized under grace, he failed GOD. Since Joshua was their leader, a successor of Moses still following under the dispensation of law. He never stopped them from eating the harvest from Canaan. He still need to harvest the first fruit and then give the best to GOD first before they can eat. It's a principle of tithing, they have to give first what belongs to GOD, then they can enjoy what GOD has given to them.

2. Under dispensation of grace where we are in, everything (not only food) need to be thanked because we are acknowledging GOD in everything.

Ephesians 5:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

3. We are the first fruit because of the LORD JESUS CHRIST. (Romans 8:23, 1 Corinthians 15:23)

C. They lived by works/labor not of grace (1 Corinthians 12:6, Romans 8:28
