Summary: There are two main magnifying apparatuses: microscopic and telescopic. The correct way to magnify God is via the telescopic method. He is already great and big. We just need to bring His greatness closer for us to appreciate all the more.

Magnification

to make bigger, to amplify, to exalt

Ps 69:30 ¶ I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving

Ps. 34:3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together

Microscopic- Making something small and minute appear so much bigger.

Reading glasses, magnifying glass

Telescopic- Bringing an object far away into view where it can be seen more clearly and distinctly. It does not make it become larger in reality, but it definitely becomes more grandeur,

I. Our Enemy is Determined to Magnify Himself

La 1:9 Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself.

-He knows that he is a fallen angel, a creation of God that has rebelled. He wants you and I to think that he is bigger than he really is. That is a tactic he uses to scare you.

Lucifer had a big problem of wanting to be bigger than God. He thought that he was up there on an even level with the Most High. Boy, was he ever mistaken.

II. The fallen nature of man pushes him to exalt himself.

It is commonly called pride.

Ps. 8:4.5

4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Mt. 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

The best that man and Satan can do is to use microscopic magnification to make ourselves appear bigger.

III. It should be our goal to Continually Magnify our Lord.

Ps. 34:3,4

3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Ps. 69:30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

Our duty is to magnify God with telescopic magnification.

That is viewing the One who is already great and grand and bringing Him even closer to us to appreciate His awesome characteristics.

Thanksgiving is one of the avenues we have to magnify our Lord and to lift Him higher.

Mary sets a wonderful example in magnifying Christ.

Luke 1:46-49

46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

She acknowledged Him as high and holy; and recognized herself as one of low estate.

One has to have access to the source desiring to be magnified. When you are focused in on that object, then you can enlarge it.

To magnify someone or something, you first need to be in line of sight; even if it is a long distance.

Jupiter is a very large planet. It is at least 8 times larger than the earth. But the best telescope available can only help you magnify it, if it is pointed in the right direction.

It is the same way in the spiritual realm. Get your eyes set on Him, then you can magnify Him greatly.
