Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Emphasizes that as followers of Christ, we are called to embody love, reflecting God's love in our identity and community.
Welcome, dear friends, to this sacred gathering where we come together to seek wisdom and understanding from the Word of God. We are here today to reflect, to learn, and to grow. We are here to strengthen our faith and to deepen our love for God and for each other.
Today, we turn our hearts and minds to the powerful words of the Apostle John in his first epistle, 1 John 4:7-12. Let us hear these words now:
"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us."
In these verses, John gives us a divine mandate: to love one another as God loves us. Love, John tells us, is not just an emotion or a feeling. It is not just something we do. Love is who God is. And because we are created in the image of God, love is who we are called to be.
Timothy Keller once said, "Not everyone is your brother or sister in the faith, but everyone is your neighbor, and you must love your neighbor." Keller’s words remind us that we are called to not only love the people who we see at church, but to love everyone we meet and know.
Today, we will reflect on three main points: Bearing the Badge of Love, Becoming Authentic Christians through Love, and Building a Loving Church Community. As we do, let us remember that love is not just something we do. It is who we are.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love that is beyond our understanding. We thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, to show us what love truly is. As we reflect on your Word today, we ask that you open our hearts and minds. Help us to understand your love more deeply. Help us to love one another as you love us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Let’s get started!
When we think about a badge, we often picture a symbol or an emblem that identifies a person as part of a particular group or organization. It's something visible, something that others can see. In the same way, as followers of Christ, we are called to bear a visible sign of our identity. And that sign is love.
Love is the badge that identifies us as Christians: It's the mark that sets us apart from the rest of the world. It's the evidence that we belong to God and that we are followers of Jesus Christ. But what does it mean to bear the badge of love? How do we wear this badge in a way that truly reflects our identity as Christians?
First: Bearing the badge of love means living out the love of God in our daily lives. It means showing kindness and compassion to others, even when it's difficult. It means forgiving those who have wronged us, even when it's hard. It means caring for the needs of others, even when it's inconvenient. It means being patient and understanding with others, even when it's challenging. It means treating others with dignity and respect, even when it's not reciprocated. It means loving others as God loves us, without condition or reservation.
Second: Bearing the badge of love means reflecting the love of God in our relationships. It means loving our families and friends with a love that is patient, kind, and selfless. It means loving our neighbors and coworkers with a love that is respectful, understanding, and compassionate. It means loving our enemies and those who persecute us with a love that is forgiving, merciful, and gracious. It means loving all people, regardless of their race, religion, or background, with a love that is inclusive, accepting, and unconditional.
Third: Bearing the badge of love means demonstrating the love of God in our actions. It means serving others with a love that is humble, selfless, and sacrificial. It means giving to others with a love that is generous, cheerful, and joyful. It means helping others with a love that is compassionate, caring, and kind. It means standing up for justice and righteousness with a love that is courageous, bold, and strong. It means living out our faith with a love that is genuine, authentic, and real.
Fourth: Bearing the badge of love means embodying the love of God in our character. It means being people of love, people who are known for their love. It means being people who radiate love, people who spread love wherever they go. It means being people who live love, people who make love a way of life. It means being people who are love, people who are the living embodiment of God's love in this world.
We bear the badge of love: We wear it proudly, not as a sign of our own goodness or righteousness, but as a sign of God's love for us and for the world. We wear it humbly, not as a badge of honor or privilege, but as a badge of service and sacrifice. We wear it faithfully, not as a badge of religion or ritual, but as a badge of relationship and commitment. We wear it boldly, not as a badge of power or prestige, but as a badge of courage and conviction. We wear it joyfully, not as a badge of duty or obligation, but as a badge of freedom and fulfillment. We wear it lovingly, not as a badge of law or legalism, but as a badge of grace and gospel.
As we continue to reflect on the words of the Apostle John, we find ourselves drawn to the idea of authenticity in our Christian walk ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
