Summary: Lot the nephew of the great man of God Abraham kept erring in his life and made some drastic decisions which not only affected him but also the entire family. Beware!

Lot was looted

Genesis 14:11”Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.”

Lot the nephew of the great man of God Abraham kept erring in his life and made some drastic decisions which not only affected him but also the entire family. Beware! When it was time for him to decide to go his way, he lifted his eyes and saw a lovely city called Sodom and Gomorrah, which was well watered, looked fertile and rich, hence Lot’s heart flirted for the city and he decided to settle there. His eyes were on the goods and riches that were in Sodom and Gomorrah! Lot failed to investigate beyond the economy of the place, we read ‘the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD’ (verse 13) Alas, Lot made an awful error! I want to pause and talk to you here! How easily we too fall prey to the sheen and gloss on the surface, failing the see the deep seated muck and grease that is on the inside! Anybody listening?

Someone decides to marry a person because he is very hilarious with excellent communication skills. How silly! Do you know the obscenities that spill out from his mouth when he is triggered? Someone decides to marry a girl because she has big eyes and long hair. Alas, how long would the hair last? Grow up please! Today our lives are crowded with agenda, targets, traveling, electronic gadgets, seminars, hot pursuit of knowledge and somewhere in between a few have shoehorned God in their lives, managing to give bits and pieces of their time to Him. But Jesus said, ‘I AM THE BREAD OF YOUR LIFE!’ He has to be number one in our life!

Coming back the subject, in the very next chapter we hear of war in Sodom and Gomorrah, the enemies came and looted the city and took away ‘all the goods and all their provisions of the city and went their way, along with Lot and all his goods.’ Lot was severely punished for his greediness! The city had lost its gloss! Friend, instead of manipulating and pushing yourself to countries where you think there is abundance, wait upon God for further plans in your life. I am speaking to someone out there today! Don’t keep jumping jobs for a few extra bucks, look for job satisfaction and peace. Keep the extra, special space in your life for God – don’t compromise on that for anything in this world! Do not settle in a country where there is no church and Bible. I know many kick themselves out of frustration for delay of visa, or lack of funds to go abroad, let us come out of this craze and grow up. Going abroad is alright, ‘only’ if it is the will of God! Where you settle is important; be it marriage, job, residence, education or whatever………let God be involved in the picture. If there is no smell of God in that place - avoid. Period.

Despite God repeatedly sending people and angels to rescue Lot from the wrong wicked place where he settled, Lot kept compromising and procrastinating in his life and the end results were catastrophic, Genesis 19:36 says” Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.” We cringe and squirm as we read this, don’t we? This line is written to warn us! Lot finally not only messed up his life but lost his wife and destroyed the lives of the daughters too. Let this be a severe caveat for each one of you who keep lingering in sin!

The tsunami of social media-facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and whatnot(rot) have drowned many; wake up before you get destroyed. Are you there? Satan may not come with horns and long ferocious teeth, instead he would lure you into porn, movies (which are nothing but subtle porn) and various forms of darkness.

Proverbs 4:13 “Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

• Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.”

• Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
