Look At The Women

I. Introduction:

A. The question stands: How do we apply these narratives of war in Canaan to our spiritual experience?

1. We apply them by recognizing the spiritual realities behind

every person,

every wicked idea,

every institution that does evil,

every relationship that is destructive.

2. Behind all these things, there is an enemy- Satan.

We are to battle against his destructive purposes.

3.Change comes from the power of the gospel, not by coercion.

Let me also note the relationship between Judges 4 and 5.

Chapter 4 is a prose history that tells of a battle fought at the foot of Mount Tabor. Chapter 5 is a poem written about the same events. The additional observations of the poem give us vivid details and insight that help us analyze what took place.

B. Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud died.

1. And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; and the commander of his army was Sisera.

2. And the sons of Israel cried to the Lord; for he had nine hundred iron chariots, and he oppressed the sons of Israel severely for twenty years.

C. This is a familiar pattern to us.

1. By now we're used to the cycle of sin in Judges- people are given some degree of relief from their problems, and then they ignore the Lord and do evil.

II. Deborah

A. She was a Prophetess (Jud.4:4)

B. She was a Judges (Jud. 4:4)

- This was an act of grace.

- It was also an act of humiliation for the Jews.

- They lived in a male-dominated society that wanted only mature male leadership.

Note 1: For God to give His people a woman judge was to treat them like little children, which is exactly what they were when it came to spiritual things.

C. She was a person who could get thing done.

- God revealed to Deborah that Barak was to assemle & lead the Israelite army & draw Sisera’s troops into a trap near Mount Tabor: and there the Lord would defeat them.

D. She was a lady who new have to rejoice. (Jud 5:1)

III. Jael (Jud. 4: 17-22)

A. She was a wife

B. She was a women who could think for her self.

C. She was a women who knew how.....

IV. The Mother Of Sisera (Jud 5:28-30)

A. She was a woman who looked for her sons return.

B. She was a woman who cried

C. She was a woman who talked to herself (5:30)

D. She was a woman who was waiting for the dead
