Series: Israel’s 2nd King- David [#10]

LIVING WITH THE ENEMY

1 Samuel 27:1-12

Introduction:

When things are difficult for long periods of time, we begin to do things that are not rational. That is what happened to David- He went from being the anointed King of Israel to a fugitive from Saul. He was tired of running. He was leading this group of people and he was tired of leading them on the run. What are you willing to do to make life simpler- Live with your enemy?

1 Samuel 27:1-4

Living with the enemy happens when…

1. You make decisions without God.

David thought to himself, “Saul is going to kill me”. What he did not know was when Saul said he wasn’t going to chase after him anymore, Saul told the truth. David was worried about something that was not even going to happen. This led David to make a decision without considering God at all. God had taken care of him to this point; but David behaved like he did not know God.

David’s decision was to take his men to Gath. Achish was the King of Gath; and David had already had dealings with Achish. Achish is the King that David acted crazy in front of and Achish kicked him out. David had been so afraid of Achish that he acted crazy; and then he fled to Achish. It is interesting that knowing who David was, Achish allowed him to live there.

1 Samuel 27:5-7

Living with the enemy happens when…

2. You make deals with the enemy.

David was given a town. He made a deal with his enemy. In fact, David had found favor with Achish. Obviously, Achish was not afraid of David and his men. David had become an ally of Israel’s enemy, the Philistines. Don’t forget that this did not just effect David, it affected his men and their families plus David’s wives.

1 Samuel 27:8-12

Living with the enemy happens when…

3. You live outside of God’s will.

God made it clear over and over again that we are not to worship other gods. He commanded the Israelites to not live among other Nations, because they would start worshipping like those around them. Not only was David living with Israel’s physical enemy; he was living with people who worshipped other Gods.

David was working for the enemy- He was raiding cities and killing everybody. He was taking plunder and reporting it to Achish. Achish believed that the Israelites would hate David, and David would live there forever.

Conclusion:

Are you living with the enemy? The enemy can make you believe that they are not your enemy anymore.
