Integrity is not a spiritual gift but the result of self-discipline and our decision to act in obedience to God's Word and mandates to our life in all situations. Do not take shortcuts to see the dream fulfilled
Integrity is a valuable character trait that reflects the alignment between our words and actions. It is not a spiritual gift, but rather the result of self-discipline and our decision to obey God's Word in all situations. Taking shortcuts to achieve our dreams may seem tempting, but true integrity requires us to stay committed to God's commands and walk in obedience. In Proverbs 10:9 (NIV), it says, "Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out."
Integrity is the ability of a person to ensure that their words align with their actions, regardless of the circumstances or people involved. The word "integrity" comes from the Latin root meaning "whole" or "complete," suggesting that it encompasses the entirety of a person's character. It is crucial to demonstrate with our lives that God governs our being. Being a Christian is not just about attending church, preaching, or serving God; it is about living under God's authority, obeying His Word in every situation, and developing our spiritual selves. Today, we will study the lives of two individuals: a king and one of his warriors.
In 2 Samuel 11:6-15, we find the account of King David and Uriah. David, being the king, had the power and authority to do as he pleased. However, when he saw Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, bathing, he sent for her and had relations with her. When he learned that Bathsheba was pregnant, David tried to cover up his sin by bringing Uriah back from the battlefront and encouraging him to go home and spend time with his wife. But Uriah, being a man of integrity, refused to enjoy the comforts of home while his fellow soldiers were still fighting. He slept at the entrance of the palace with the king's servants, demonstrating his commitment to his duty. David persisted in his attempts to deceive Uriah, even getting him drunk, but Uriah remained steadfast in his decision not to sleep with his wife. Eventually, David resorted to ordering Uriah's death by placing him in a dangerous position in battle.
Integrity is an all-encompassing trait; it cannot be selective. It is not merely about being honest or following societal norms; it is about consistently acting in accordance with our beliefs and values. Let us examine the characteristics of a person of integrity:
1. Wholeness: A person of integrity is complete and consistent in their behavior. They do not display different personas depending on the situation or people involved. They are the same person, whether in public or private.
2. Spiritual Maturity: Integrity requires a level of maturity that enables individuals to act in the best possible manner in all circumstances. People of integrity are trustworthy, reliable, and share their wisdom with others.
3. Trustworthiness: A person of integrity is someone who can be relied upon because their actions align with their words. They are known for their honesty and dependability.
4. Consistency: Individuals with integrity have a single-minded focus and maintain a consistent perspective that guides their lives in the right direction. They exhibit constancy in their thoughts, emotions, and will.
5. Faithfulness and Loyalty: People of integrity are committed to their principles and remain loyal to them. They are faithful to God, their relationships, and their responsibilities.
6. Obedience: Individuals with integrity have a heart of obedience. They do not seek to please themselves but strive to follow God's commands, even when it goes against their own desires or emotions.
7. Discipline: People of integrity possess self-discipline, which allows them to stay committed to their values and make choices that align with their beliefs. They are willing to endure hardships and challenges for the sake of doing what is right.
Living a life of integrity brings numerous benefits. Let us explore some of them:
1. Being a Living Example: When we live with integrity, our lives become a testimony to others. Our actions speak louder than our words, and people trust and respect us. Our integrity can influence and inspire others to follow our example.
2. Strengthening the Spiritual Self: Acting in integrity strengthens our spiritual selves. When we align our lives with God's Word, our character grows, and we become more resilient in the face of temptations and challenges.
To live with integrity, we must allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Here are some steps to help us live with integrity:
1. Surrender: Allow God to remove anything in our lives that hinders integrity, such as negative behaviors, habits, or relationships.
2. Embrace Change: Be open to the transformation that God wants to bring into our lives. Let Him replace old patterns with new ones that reflect His character.
3. Seek Guidance: Surround ourselves with wise counsel, seeking guidance from mentors or spiritual leaders who can help us navigate difficult decisions and hold us accountable.
4. Cultivate Discipline: Develop self-discipline to stay committed to God's commands and make choices that align with His Word, even when it is challenging.
Integrity is a valuable character trait that reflects the alignment between our words and actions. It is not something we can selectively apply; it requires consistency in all aspects of our lives. Living with integrity brings numerous benefits, including being a living example to others and strengthening our spiritual selves. Let us strive to live with integrity, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us and transform us into people who honor God in all we do.
