Living at the Well John 4

Tell the story There are Christ Like Illustrations packed in this story

1. Hidden in Christ

V.1-2 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.

Does God get the blame for your fruit?

A. Colossians 3:1-4 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

B. John 15 – one with Christ

C. 1 Chronicles 14:15 – David would go out to battle. Enemy was gone, confused.

D. 2 Chronicles 20 – Jehoshaphat. Enemy turned on themselves.

E. Story of Gideon - The story goes on to report that Gideon and his men did exactly that. They beat the Midianites and restored Israel to a place of strength and out from under the abuse of surrounding nations. It's a wonderful story. But in the middle of this miracle is a most unusual verse. "So the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon" (Judg. 6:34). That would be good enough just as it is. But it really says so much more. The word "came upon" actually means to put on, wear, clothe, be clothed. "In Hebrew this literally means 'The Spirit of the Lord clothed Himself with Gideon.'" Stunning! God is clothed with Gideon. I can't think of any picture of the Spirit-filled life that more accurately describes my heart more than this one: God put Gideon on like a glove. Here is the picture: The Presence of God is hosted by a person so significantly that He actually lives through them. It's not cancelling out who they are. It's capturing it to the fullest, immersed in divine influence. It is as though their personality; their gifts and demeanor are all being expressed through God living in them. Most importantly, here is another grace moment. Gideon had received favor that brought the enabling Presence of God into His life to empower him to do what was impossible for him to do. “Bill Johnson”

2. Plan of God

V.3-4 So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. Now he had to go through Samaria.

The plan of God is Breakthrough.

The plan of God is often an unusual route. Isaiah 28:21 - The Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon—to do his work, his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task.

Re route the plan of God, Change of plans. “Back again - wrestle”

2 Samuel 5:20 - So David went to Baal Perazim and there he defeated the Philistines. He said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies like a flood.” And so that place is called Baal Perazim. HE IS THE LORD OF BREAKTHROUGH!

Sometimes God will take the unusual route to get to breakthrough.

Headed north, reroutes to south west where He’s already been. But He must go back.

Ignoring the absence of HIS presence and living in His presence until there’s a manifestation of His presence.

Keep yourself hidden in the secret place until there’s breakthrough.

Mary ignoring the no until there’s breakthrough to a yes. Timelessness.

3. Worship - there’s our worship then there’s the woman at the well worship.

V. 29 come and see!!!!!

Spirit and Truth - Spirit – pneuma. Truth – not concealing, revealing truth.

IN – to give self wholly and completely.

Not just about a worship set and the motions we go through.

This woman never lifted her hands, but she changed her city.

Worship in Spirit and truth, hers was come and see.

Don’t let your worship stop after three songs.

A. Worship is a lifestyle

B. Worship feeds God

C. Worship changes cities. Atmosphere changer

4. Refreshing

V.4-6 - Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.esus sat down at the well.

HE ACTUALLY SAT ON THE WELL!

Sat - sedentary, immovable, settled and stedfast.

Before He has dialogue about living water that constantly refreshes, HE demonstrates the position of every Christ follower.

Sits down at a well.

Revival comes, refreshing stays, get revived but then live at the well.

Sat down at Jacobs well
