There are valuable life lessons we can extract from the story of Lazarus' resurrection that may not have been apparent before.
During the Sundays in Lent, we have explored various memorable events and characters from the Bible. Today, we delve into one of the most well-known stories in the Bible: the raising of Lazarus. This story holds valuable lessons that can benefit us all, regardless of our circumstances. Let us examine these lessons from Lazarus.
When Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus that their brother Lazarus was sick, they expected him to come immediately and heal him. However, Jesus deliberately delayed his arrival for two more days. This delay may have seemed like a denial of their request, but Jesus had a greater purpose in mind. He wanted to bring glory to God through Lazarus' resurrection. We must remember that God acts according to his own timetable and agenda, not ours. His delay does not mean he has denied our request. God always shows up at the right time.
In this story, we see Jesus weeping at the death of Lazarus. His display of sorrow shows us that he understands and cares about our pain. Jesus experienced the full range of human emotions during his time on earth, including grief. He weeps with us in our times of sorrow, showing his deep empathy and understanding. We can take comfort in knowing that Jesus truly knows what we are going through and cares for us.
Death can be a dreadful event, causing fear and uncertainty. However, Jesus assures us that death does not have the final say. In his conversation with Martha, Jesus declares himself as the resurrection and the life. He promises that those who believe in him will live even if they die physically. Jesus' resurrection on Easter Sunday demonstrates his victory over death. Through faith in Christ, we can have eternal life and conquer the dread of death.
The story of Lazarus also teaches us that God wants to bring life to the dead areas of our lives. Just as Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb, he calls us to come alive in him. We all experience deadness in various aspects of our lives, such as lost hope, joy, love, or peace. However, Jesus invites us to come alive and experience resurrection in these areas. He can revive our hope, restore our joy, heal broken relationships, and bring peace to our hearts. God desires for us to live fully and abundantly in his presence.
In conclusion, the story of Lazarus offers valuable lessons for us today. We learn that delay does not mean denial, displaying grief does not mean despair, death is not the end, and God desires to bring life to dead areas of our lives. Let us embrace these lessons and allow Jesus to bring resurrection and new life into every aspect of our existence. May we trust in his timing, find comfort in his empathy, and experience the victory over death that he has secured for us.
