Summary: In this sermon we'll explore biblical examples and teachings that illustrate the brevity of life and the reality of hell.
The phrase "life is short and hell is hot" is a reminder of the nature of our time on earth and the eternal consequences of our choices. This phrase is not found in the Bible, but its themes are echoed throughout Scripture. In this sermon we'll explore biblical examples and teachings that illustrate the brevity of life and the reality of hell.
The Brevity of Life
The Bible teaches that life is short and fleeting. James 4:14 says, "What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." This verse reminds us that our time on earth is brief and can be taken away at any moment.
In Psalm 90:12, Moses prays, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." This verse encourages us to make the most of the time we have and to live wisely, recognizing that our days are limited.
The Reality of Hell
The Bible also teaches that hell is a real place where those who reject God will spend eternity. In Matthew 25:41, Jesus says, "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'"
Revelation 20:15 describes hell as a "lake of fire" where those whose names are not found in the book of life will be thrown. This verse emphasizes the eternal nature of hell, saying that those who are thrown into the lake of fire will be tormented "day and night for ever and ever."
Examples from Scripture
Several biblical examples illustrate the consequences of rejecting God and the importance of living wisely in light of eternity.
The Rich Fool (Luke 12:13-21): Jesus tells the parable of a rich man who builds bigger barns to store his wealth, but dies suddenly, leaving behind all his possessions. This story highlights the fleeting nature of wealth and the importance of prioritizing eternal things.
The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): The prodigal son's decision to reject his father's love and live a life of sin ultimately leads to ruin and desperation. This parable illustrates the consequences of rejecting God and the importance of seeking forgiveness and restoration.
The Five Wise and Five Foolish Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13): Jesus tells the parable of ten virgins who are waiting for the bridegroom's return. The five wise virgins are prepared with oil in their lamps, while the five foolish virgins are not. When the bridegroom returns, the foolish virgins are left behind, illustrating the importance of being prepared for eternity.
Conclusion
The phrase "life is short and hell is hot" is a sobering reminder of the importance of living wisely and prioritizing eternal things. The Bible teaches that life is fleeting and that hell is a real place where those who reject God will spend eternity. As we reflect on these truths, may we be motivated to live with eternity in mind, seeking to honor God and make the most of the time we have.
