Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
This sermon explores the concept of true happiness as defined by God, emphasizing that it is often found in unexpected places and not through worldly experiences.
(Pastor, tell a story about a time you tried to find happiness in something ultimately unfulfilling). We all have these kinds of experiences, right? Where we are trying to make happiness happen through experiences, only to find out later that our attempt at happiness didn’t quite measure up. And on top of that, oftentimes, the things we are involved in day in and day out, don’t seem to produce much inner joy either. Our careers… Our relationships… Our hobbies… They can feel like a “grind” – especially when life isn’t going as smoothly as we’d like it.
In the Church, sometimes people discourage others from searching for happiness. I do not, though. Because think of the alternative…if we aren’t happy, we are unhappy. And I don’t think anyone wants that. No one should want to be unhappy, should they? So, at some point along the way, we are bound to ask, “Doesn’t God want me to be happy?” And I always answer this question the exact same way.
Yes, God wants you to be happy
Listen to what the Bible teaches in Psalm 144:15: “Happy are the people who are in such a state; Happy are the people whose God is the Lord!” The Bible says the people whose God is the Lord are happy! Wow. Isn’t this amazing? This doesn’t leave us with any doubts about God’s heart for our happiness. So for followers of Jesus, happiness should be an ever-present part of our lives. And not only that…the pursuit of happiness is an act of worship! When we are laying our lives down for Jesus…when the one true God is our Lord…we are happy people.
Happiness is not found where we normally look for it
