This sermon explores the Christian call to a higher standard of honesty, beyond not lying, and opening up to God's reality, perspective, and standards.

Introduction

Hey, everyone! So glad to see all your lovely faces here today. We're here to share, to learn, and to grow in faith together, right? Well, I'm pretty excited about what we're going to talk about today. It's something that's as essential to our Christian walk as breathing is to life. We're talking about truth and honesty, folks.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "Truth and honesty? Come on, I learned that in kindergarten!" But stick with me here. There's so much more depth to this topic than we often give it credit for. As Christians, we're called to a higher standard of honesty, a kind of truth-telling that goes beyond just not telling lies.

A. W. Tozer, a respected Christian author, once said, "Truth is not something we have to go after, it is something we have to open up to." That's a pretty interesting way to look at it, isn't it? Truth isn't just about speaking facts. It's about opening up to God's reality, His perspective, and His standards.

Let's take a look at the full Scripture passage we're going to discuss today. It's from Exodus 20:16: "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor." At first glance, it might seem pretty straightforward. Don't lie about other people, right? But as we'll see, there's a lot more to it than that.

Before we start, let's open up in prayer.

Dear Lord, we thank You for bringing us together today. We ask that You open our hearts and our minds to Your Word. Help us to understand and apply the truths we learn today. And may we always strive to reflect Your honesty and integrity in our own lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

The Importance of Truth and Honesty in God's Eyes

In the eyes of God, truth and honesty hold a significant place. They are not just virtues to be practiced, but they are the very essence of His nature. God is truth. Everything about Him is genuine, authentic, and real. There's no falsehood or deceit in Him. This is a profound truth that we, as His followers, need to grasp.

When we look at the Bible, we see God's heart for truth and honesty. In Proverbs 12:22, it says, "The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in people who are trustworthy." This verse clearly shows God's feelings towards truth and falsehood. He detests lying, but takes delight in those who are honest and trustworthy.

Now, let's take a closer look at our main Scripture for today, Exodus 20:16, "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor." This commandment, part of the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai, is a clear indication of God's stance on honesty. It's not just about not lying about others. It's about being a person of integrity, a person who values truth above all else.

The commandment to not bear false witness against our neighbor is not just about lying in a court of law. It's about our everyday interactions with people. It's about not spreading rumors, not gossiping, not slandering others. It's about speaking the truth in love, even when it's hard.

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:25, "Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body." Here, Paul is calling the believers to a higher standard of truth-telling. It's not just about not lying. It's about actively speaking the truth, about being honest in all our dealings.

This call to truth and honesty is not just for our benefit. It's for the benefit of the body of Christ, the church. When we are truthful and honest, we build trust and unity in the church. We become a community that reflects the truth and honesty of God.

But truth and honesty are not always easy. They require courage and strength. They require us to sometimes say things that are hard to say, to confront situations that are uncomfortable. But the reward is worth it. When we choose truth and honesty, we choose to live in a way that pleases God. We choose to live in a way that reflects His nature.

So, let's strive to be people of truth and honesty. Let's strive to reflect God's nature in our lives. Let's strive to be a community that values truth and honesty above all else. Because in the end, that's what God desires from us. That's what He delights in.
