Summary: Spiritual lessons from climbing a mountain
The bible says,
” For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
Romans 1:20
This morning I want to share a few things I was reminded of up there in the mountains. After that introduction you are probably wondering what the opening Scripture had to do with climbing Mount Eddy. That’s the first thing I want to talk about. 1. God is an awesome Creator! Did you notice God’s heart in the Scripture? Let’s read it again.
"Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth... be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people.”
Have you ever created something and sat back, looked at it – and said, “That ain’t half bad!” Julie amazes me with her painting, her stain glass, and hot glass stuff. I look at it and it delights me. My friend, Tom Scott, amazes me with his guitar playing and song writing. Sandy draws awesome cartoons that are a delight. They make us laugh.
What do YOU do? You write something, draw something, cook something, create something – and sometimes you just can’t help but be delighted in it. It is so good! You rejoice in it. You are glad for what you created. One of the things that fascinates me; one of the things that always amazes me when I hike in the wilderness, whether it’s in the desert or in the mountains is the multitude of delightful creations that you know that only God enjoys. On top of Mountain Eddy, as I was eating my lunch, a florescent green fly came to visit me. He wasn’t green – he was florescent green. He shown like a little flying jewel. I never saw one just like that before. I never saw many of the flowers we saw. The yellow lupine and pastel alpine stars and orange columbine I knew. But there were some wonderful floral creations that were a new delight. And how many wonderful things, do you imagine, grow or live in inaccessible high mountain meadows or low isolated desert places? Why are they there? Only God can delight in them. Only God enjoys them – and He DOES! That the character of our wonderful Creator God. He loves beauty. And brings us to the next point:
2. God delights in His creation. Our God, our wonderful, awesome Creator, delights in HIS highest creation, most. He delights in His people. And His desire is that we be glad and rejoice. He delights in our delight! That’s what He created us for. He said,
“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
King David is great awe said, “Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights.” Psalm 36:6-8
