KEY POINTS IN THE PASSAGE:

1. The Lord Jesus promised to return for us.

READ: Luke 19:12 He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return.

A. THE NOBLEMAN. The nobleman is Jesus.

B. THE FAR COUNTRY. "A distant country" means that He cannot be expected to return very soon.

C. THE PROMISE. Jesus is going away for some time, but when he returns he will come as absolute King.

READ: John 14:3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with Me where I am.

D. PRINCIPLE: Jesus will come again to reign as King.

E. CHALLENGE: Are you ready for Jesus to come back?

2. We must be faithful to serve Him until He returns.

READ: Luke 19:13 Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’

A. THE SERVANTS. The servants represent followers of Jesus.

B. MINA.

- Ten minas is equal to about one hundred days' wages.

- The mina is the gospel business we are supposed to be engaged in.

READ: 1 Thessalonians 2:4 For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.

READ: 1 Timothy 6:20 Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge.

C. STEWARDSHIP. Each servant gets the same amount.

D. GOD HAS GIVEN US RESPONSIBILITY. God called us to share the gospel. In this parable every one of the ten servants was given the same thing.

E. FAITHFULNESS. There are promised rewards for those who are faithful in their charge.

READ: Romans 14:12 Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.

READ: John 9:4 We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.

F. REWARD.

READ:

Luke 19:16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’

Luke 19:17 “‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’

Luke 19:18 “The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’

Luke 19:19 “‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’

- There is a reward for faithful service.

- He will reward His servants according to what they have accomplished.

- Faithfulness is rewarded with greater opportunities and greater responsibilities.

- Rewards. In this parable, each of the ten servants received the same amount but different rewards.

G. LESSON. The important thing is not how much ability you have but how faithful you are to use what you have for the Lord.

H. PRINCIPLE: Those who are trustworthy in little things will be given more; and to everyone who has, more will be given.

3. Wasted opportunity means loss of reward.

A. THE ACCUSATION.

Luke 19:20 “But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.

Luke 19:21 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’

Luke 19:22 “‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant,

Luke 19:23 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’

Luke 19:24 “Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’

- The servant didn’t feel that the master deserved to benefit from his labor.

B. THE MOTTO OF THE UNFAITHFUL SERVANT: “It's my life and I'll do what I want!”

C. WASTED OPPORTUNITY. Wasted opportunity means loss of reward.

D. HEART PROBLEM. The reason why this servant was unfaithful is because his heart was not right toward his master. He saw his master as a hard man to deal with, who was demanding and unfair.

E. PRINCIPLE. “For the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.”

4. There is no room for rebellious subjects in Christ's Kingdom.

READ: Luke 19:14 But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’
