Summary: A look at Philippians 2:1-11

1) PLAY AT A HIGHER LEVEL

Because we are Christians(verses 1,2) Paul instructs us to live by a different value system than the world. In the worlds system there is a pecking order. But in the kingdom, we consider others "better than ourselves." We don’t focus on selfish ambition or vain conceits but play at a higher level. You can think of many examples here that speak to the high road Christians must take. Mt. 5:43-48; 1John 2:15-17 will help you elaborate on the higher level we are called to.

2) iT’S NOT ALL ABOUT ME

We live in a nacicistic society. That is the way of the world. God speaks to us about Kingdom values and says that it is all about others. The character trait God wants to see in us more than any other is love. How can I show love unless its not all about me!!

1 Cor. 6:7 says that it is better to be cheated or wronged than have to have my own way all the time. All the one anothers in scripture will back you up here. If my faith in Christ is just about Jesus and me, I don’t have bilblical Christianity.

3) THE WAY UP IS DOWN

The way to succeed in God’s kingdom, the way to the top of God’s ladder, seems to be the way of servanthood. Mark 9:35 and the following passages in Mark 10 speak to the first will be last and the last will be first. It also says that if I want to be great I must be a servant of all. This is total value inversion from the world’s way of thinking. This is a truth that transforms if we can truly believe it and live it. Philippians 2:5-11 is the example of Christ servanthood and therefore God exalting Him.
