“King David The Prophet”

Acts 2:29-38

We have been looking at the sermon from Peter on the day of Pentecost

Verses 14-16 is an introduction and testimony as to what is taking place with great power from God.

Verses 17-22 is Point 1 as Peter reminds them what Joel said: Joel 2:28-32 Same words as Peter speaks in theses verses.

Verses 22-28 is Point 2 in Peter’s message:

It was God Who Crucified Jesus.

Also it was God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit that was involved in the resurrection of Jesus.

Verses 29-36 we are looking at Point 3 and

Verses 37-41the conclusion of Peter’s message.

Verses 29-36:

Acts 2:29 “Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.”

I am not attempting to over analyze this passage but I find it interesting that he uses two (2) names to identify those listening.

Men – This is a reference to mankind with no specific gender in mind. It could be just “men” but as we reach the end of his sermon Peter is making the case that salvation is available to all.

Brethren – I believe there is little doubt that Peter is referring to his Jewish kin when he says “Brethren.”

David’s sepulcher (grave) was known and visited by many as they were reminded of the greatness of their king.

Acts 2:30 “Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;”

Prophet - OT prophets, having foretold the kingdom, deeds and death, of Christ the Messiah.

In NT Greek writings, an interpreter of oracles or of other hidden things. (They told forth and expounded of the Word of God).

David spoke often in Psalms concerning the Messiah and the promises made to him as king.

Psalm 22

Psalm 89:3-4 “I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, 4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.”

Psalm 89:35-36 “Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. 36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.”

Psalm 132:11 “The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.”

Acts 2:31 “He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.”

Psalm 16:8-11 “I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

Acts 2:32 “This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.”

Peter has shown the evidence that Jesus is the Messiah as promised by God through David.

He said: “whereof we all are witnesses.”

Jesus walked with them and among them after His resurrection until the time of His ascension to heaven.

Acts 2:33-35 “Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. Acts 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

Acts 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.”

Psalm 110:1 “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

Peter, after giving the evidence, leaves them in the place of decision; accept or reject all the facts that have been presented.

Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

Therefore - these things being so

Salvation has always been available to “whomsoever” but the choice is still individual.

My choice or your choice; my mother, father, sister or brother cannot make it for me.

An invitation is not unlike a fisherman who has placed his net in the water and allows the fish to be near the net.

At a given time he will begin to draw the net; close the net so that the fish can be brought into the boat.
