Summary: In this sermon, we'll explore what it means to keep our "house" pure and provide examples of detestable things to avoid.
The Bible instructs us not to bring detestable things into the house of God (Deuteronomy 7:26, 2 Corinthians 6:14-17). As believers, our bodies are considered temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and we must prioritize purity and holiness in our lives.
In this sermon, we'll explore what it means to keep our "house" pure and provide examples of detestable things to avoid.
What are Detestable Things?
Detestable things refer to anything that God considers abhorrent or repugnant. These can include:
Idolatry and false worship (Deuteronomy 7:25-26, 2 Kings 23:24)
Sinful behaviors, such as immorality, drunkenness, and greed (Galatians 5:19-21, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
Unwholesome speech, including gossip, lies, and filthy language (Ephesians 4:29, Colossians 3:8-9)
Worldly influences and associations that can lead us away from God (2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 1 Corinthians 15:33)
Examples of Detestable Things
Idols and graven images: Creating or worshiping idols is detestable to God (Deuteronomy 7:25-26). In today's world, this can include prioritizing material possessions or relationships over our relationship with God.
Unwholesome media: Consuming media that promotes immorality, violence, or false values can corrupt our minds and hearts (Philippians 4:8-9, 1 Corinthians 10:31).
Toxic relationships: Engaging in relationships that lead us away from God or promote sinful behaviors can be detestable (2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 1 Corinthians 15:33).
Greed and materialism: Prioritizing wealth and possessions over spiritual growth and obedience to God is detestable (1 Timothy 6:10, Matthew 6:24).
Consequences of Bringing Detestable Things into the House
Bringing detestable things into our lives can lead to:
Spiritual defilement and separation from God (Leviticus 20:22-23, Deuteronomy 7:26)
Corruption and decay of our moral character (Galatians 6:7-8, 1 Corinthians 3:16-17)
Loss of fellowship with God and His people (2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 1 John 1:6-7)
Conclusion
As believers, we must prioritize purity and holiness in our lives, avoiding detestable things that can lead us away from God. By doing so, we can maintain a healthy relationship with God and live a life that honors Him.
Call to Action
Examine your life and identify any detestable things that may be present. Repent and turn away from these things, seeking to live a life that is pleasing to God. Prioritize spiritual growth, and surround yourself with influences that promote holiness and obedience to God's Word.
