Introduction

Church, we are at the final week of our series, “Glow in the Dark.” I hope this series has been helpful for you. I know it has been helpful for me, as we’ve discussed the concepts of darkness and light found within scripture. We’ve covered several different topics related to this throughout the series, but today I want us to close out with a discussion about the importance of keeping our light burning.

Another way to say this? Longevity as a follower of Christ who is “on fire.”

In this season of my life, I was ready to throw in the towel. But that’s when God began to show me the elements of a lifetime spent with Christ, rather than just a couple of months or years. Right now, in our world I believe there are some who claim to know Christ, but don’t actively follow Him. For instance, there are some who know all the language and have prayed the prayer of salvation. However, that’s about as far as it’s gone for them. They’ve booked their ticket to heaven one day, and have proceeded to go about life doing their own thing.

And if we are honest, that’s exactly what the devil will try to tempt all of us to do at some point or another. The enemy of our souls is willing to play the long game, to be patient, and to slowly lull as to apathy… But God has called us to stay faithful, vigilant, and steadfast. He Has called us to “keep the light burning” and that’s the focus of our time today.

Longevity as a follower of Christ who is “on fire.”

Did you catch that? We aren’t the ones lighting our lamp, it is God who does that. However, when it comes to keeping our lamp burning, that’s where we get heavily involved in the process. I want to give you three, practical steps you can take starting today to keep your lamp burning throughout the trials of life.

Maybe you have noticed a similar trend that I have in our culture. There are many in my life who have decided, for one reason or another, to walk away from their faith in Jesus Christ. There are numerous excuses as to why they did this. However, if we were to get to the root cause of many of these folks, I would argue it has much to do with community, or lack thereof. Many of us have an expectation of what community and fellowship should or could look like, and when that expectation isn’t met we get discouraged and oftentimes walk away from it all.

However, the Bible makes it clear that we were never meant to do life alone, we were built for relationships ... View this full sermon with PRO Premium
