Just Do It

Summary: A fresh look at the communion service.
1. COMMUNION IS A COMMAND
"this do...this do"
The command to partake of the Lord’s Supper is as important as any of the 10 commandments. Communion is not an optional extra. Eating and drinking at the Lord’s Table is more important than eating and drinking your daily food.
2. COMMUNION IS A COMMEMORATION
"this do in remembrance of me...this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me"
On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, 350 Japanese war planes bombed Pearl Harbour. 18 battle ships were sunk or destroyed. 200 airplanes were put out of commission. 3, 581 servicemen were either killed or wounded. Thus America’s war cry as she entered World War II was: “Remember Pearl Harbour”. At the communion service today, we too have a battle cry and it is: “Remember Jesus Christ”.
3. COMMUNION IS A COMMUNICATION
"ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come"
The word “shew” means to tell, to explain. Thus every time we have communion, we are preaching a sermon that Christ is the Saviour of the world through His death on the cross.
We preach a silent sermon every time we take the bread and cup. It is a kind of object lesson. Some churches break bread during the service. It is one of the most effective evangelistic tools.
4. COMMUNION IS A COMMUNION
1 Corinthians 10:16 "The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?"
The word communion literally means ’union with’. We come to the Lord’s Supper because we are in union with Christ. We come to it because we are in union with each other.
I hear the words of love,
I gaze upon the blood,
I see the mighty sacrifice,
And I have peace with God.
’Tis everlasting peace,
Sure as Jehovah’s name;
’Tis stable as His steadfast throne,
Forevermore the same.
The clouds may come and go,
And storms may sweep my sky—
This blood-sealed friendship changes not:
The cross is ever nigh.
My love is ofttimes low,
My joy still ebbs and flows;
But peace with Him remains the same—
No change Jehovah knows.
I change, He changes not,
The Christ can never die;
His love, not mine, the resting-place,
His truth, not mine, the tie.
