Summary: Judgment is Coming

Acts 17 v 16 - 34 Judgment is Coming

Paul's Start -

Their Welcome 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said

Their Worship - Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. (too Religious)

Their Want - 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions,

I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.

Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship,

Their Witness - him declare I unto you.

Paul's Stay -

The Greatness of God - His Position

His Creation - 24 God that made the world and all things therein,

His Control - seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, (Presently)

His Capacity - dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

His Competence - 25 neither is worshipped with men’s hands,

His Completeness - as though he needed any thing,

The Goodness of God - His Provision

seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

The Score - seeing he giveth, The Scope - to all,

The Skill - life, and breath, and all things; gives Life, Liberty, and Living.

The Governance of God - His Possession

His Plan - 26 and hath made of one blood (one man)

His Power - all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth,

His Providence - He has determined

Our Times - and hath determined the times before appointed,

Our Towns - and the bounds of their habitation;

Our Terms - The Search - 27 that they should seek

The Sought - 27 that they should seek the Lord,

The Sight - if haply they might feel after him, and find him,

The Simplicity - though he be not far from every one of us: Tennyson

Speak to Him thou, for thou He hears, and Spirit with Spirit can meet

Closer is He than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet.

His Primacy -

Our Life - In God Alone - We Exist - 28 for in him we live,

Physically, Mentally, Morally, Spiritually, and Eternally.

Our Liberty - In God Alone - We Consist - and move,

Our Lot - In God Alone - We Persist - and have our being;

Our Likeness - In God Alone - We Subsist - as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

His Paternity -

Our Form - 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God,

Our Failure - we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.

Our Folly - 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at;

Our Fault - but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Our Fate - 31 because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained;

Paul's Stance - The

Divine Appointment is Fixed - 31 because he hath appointed a day

Divine Appearance is Full - in the which he will judge the world

Divine Approach is Fair - in righteousness

Divine Approval is Faithful - by that man whom he hath ordained;

Divine Appeal Foretold - whereof he hath given assurance unto all men

Divine Appraisal is Final - in that he hath raised him from the dead.

The Promise of Judgment - 31 because he hath appointed a day

The People of Judgment - in the which he will judge the world

The Principle of Judgment - in righteousness

The Person of Judgment - by that man whom he hath ordained;

The Proclamation of Judgment -

whereof he hath given assurance unto all men,

The Proof of Judgment - in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Paul's Stop -

The Problem 32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead

The Pride - some mocked:

The Procrastination - others said, We will hear thee again of this matter

The Price - 33 So Paul departed from among them.

The Prize - 34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed:

among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite,

and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
