Introduction

Welcome, dear friends, to our time of shared worship and reflection. Today, we gather in the comforting embrace of our faith, united by our shared love for the Lord and our unwavering belief in His unending goodness. We find ourselves turning to the timeless wisdom of the Bible, where we seek solace, strength, and guidance. Our focus today is on Psalm 16, a beautiful testament of trust, a powerful proclamation of faith, and a triumphant testimony of victory over evil with God.

Before we delve into the depths of this Scripture, let us remember the words of the esteemed Christian theologian, J.I. Packer, who once said, "Once you become aware that the main business that you are here for is to know God, most of life's problems fall into place of their own accord."

Trusting in God's Goodness

We gather here today, friends, with hearts open and minds ready to receive the wisdom that God has in store for us. We've read the words of Psalm 16, a beautiful testament of trust and faith. It's a powerful proclamation, a triumphant testimony. But what does it mean for us? How do we apply these truths to our lives?

Let's take a moment to consider the words of this Scripture. The Psalmist says, "Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge." This is a statement of trust, a declaration of faith. The Psalmist is saying, "God, I trust you. I believe in your goodness. I know that you will protect me."

This is the first truth we need to understand. Trusting in God's goodness is not just about believing that God is good. It's about believing that God is good to us. It's about believing that God cares for us, that He loves us, that He is working for our good.

Now, let's look at the next part of the verse. The Psalmist says, "I say to the Lord, 'You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.'" This is a statement of dependence. The Psalmist is acknowledging that all good things come from God. He is recognizing that without God, there is no good in his life.

This is the second truth we need to understand. Trusting in God's goodness is not just about believing that God is good. It's about recognizing that all good things come from God. It's about acknowledging our dependence on Him.

Let's move on to the next part of the verse. The Psalmist says, "As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight." This is a statement of community. The Psalmist is expressing his delight in the community of believers, the saints in the land. He is acknowledging that they are the excellent ones, the ones who bring him joy.

This is the third truth we need to understand. Trusting in God's goodness is not just about believing that God is good. It's about finding joy in the community of believers. It's about recognizing the goodness of God in the lives of others.

Finally, let's look at the last part of the verse. The Psalmist says, "The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips." This is a statement of rejection. The Psalmist is rejecting the false gods of this world. He is refusing to participate in their rituals or even to speak their names.

This is the fourth truth we need to understand. Trusting in God's goodness is not just about believing that God is good. It's about rejecting the false gods of this world. It's about refusing to find our good in anything or anyone other than God.
