Jesus Went Thirsty So I That Would Not Have To

John 19:28-29

Topic: "I Thirst"

During the very last hour as Jesus Christ was being crucified and hung on the old rugged cross, dying for the sins of the world, in John 19:28 it says, "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I Thirst." Now a vessel full of sour wine(vinegar) was sitting there, and they filled a sponge with sour wine (vinegar), put it on a hyssop and put to it to his mouth. " Now John 19:28-29 was a fulfillment to one of the Old Testament Prophecy concerning Jesus Christ cruxifixion on the cross. In Psalm 69:21 says, "They gave me also gall for my meat, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink."

Now it was very interesting to hear Jesus say on the cross, "I Thirst." The reason why it is interesting is because it was Jesus who told the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:10, that "if you knew the gift of God, and who it was that asked you to give m a drink, you would have asked him for a drink, and he would have given you the Living Waters of Eternal Life and Salvation."

Also, it was interesting to hear Jesus say, "I Thirst", while he was dying on the cross because He had said in John 6:35 that " I am the Bread of Life; he that comes to Him shall never hunger, and he that believe on Him shall never thirst."

Furthermore, it was interesting to hear Jesus say, "I Thirst", while was dying on the cross because He had said in John 7:37-38 that "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water, which is symbolic of the Holy Spirit."

So, in these passage of scriptures of John 19:28, as we see Jesus Christ on the cross,

Not just as the Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins of the world,

Not just as the Savior of the World, who came to seek and to save that was lost,

Not just as the Bread of Life, who came satisfies our spiritual

hunger

But we also see Him as the Water of Life who came to satisfy or replenish our spiritual thirst for God and for the will of God in our lives. But as the Water of Life, we see and hear Jesus says these two powerful words coming out of his mouth as He was coming to the end of His cruxifixion as He hung on that old rugged cross, "I Thirst."

So the question is, How is that Jesus Christ,

who is the one who created the clouds to bring rain on earth,

the one who created the oceans, the sea, the rivers, and the lakes;

the one who created water for us to drink to satisfy our physical thirst

And as the Water of Life, He is the one who satisfy our spiritual thirst;

How is it that Jesus Christ, the source of the Living Waters from heaven, the one who is known as the spiritual Rock who provided water for the children of Israel to drink in I Corinthians 10:4;

How is it that Jesus Christ being the one who can quench all manner of thirst had become thirsty while being crucified and was hanging upon the old rugged cross?

1.First of all, we must understand that Jesus Christ was not just divine, but He was also human. And as a human being, Jesus got thirsty, especially after He was crucified and hanging on the cross in the heat of the day for about six hours. And if the truth was told, Jesus had been without water longer than that because

From the time the Chief Priests, the Pharisees and the Scribes and Roman soldiers had arrested Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsamane ,

From the time He was tried by the unjust Sanhedrin Council,

From the time He was spat upon

From the time He beaten and whipped by the Roman Soldiers,

From the time they had crown Him with the crown of thorns as the King of the Jews.

From the time He was violently whipped and led by the Roman soldiers to walk through Jerusalem, carrying the cross on His back on the way to Calvary’s Hill to be crucified;

From the Garden of Gethsamane to the Cross.........

Not one time did anyone offer Him a glass of water to drink.

Psalms 22:15 gives us a glimpse of how bad Jesus was thirsty on the cross. It says, "My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws, and thou hast brought me into the dust of death."
