We left last week as Jesus had sent the Twelve off in the boat to go to the other side of the sea, while Jesus stayed behind.
Remember, He came to this place in the beginning to have some alone time because of His loss with the beheading of John the Baptist.
But the people had followed, and Jesus, put His personal pain and hurt aside because He had compassion on those in need. And showing the true meaning of love, putting others needs before His needs, Jesus ministered to the people.
So we pick up today with the Apostles crossing the sea of Galilee, and Jesus, after sending the crowds away fed, both physically and spiritually, went off to pray until evening.
SCRIPTURE READING
Matthew 14:24 – 33 Jesus goes to pray
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It’s a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid."
28 "Lord, if it’s you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
29 "Come," he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
Prayer for the Holy Spirit and understanding of God’s Holy Word
I. The Apostles face another storm, this one without Jesus
a. Jesus was with them to calm the storm last time they were at sea.
i. Life is easier when the Lord is next to you.
1. Many storms can be avoided this way.
2. Protection, benefits, blessings, are all in Christ.
ii. This time they faced the storm without Him right there.
b. This storm represents our lives.
i. The storms come in our lives.
1. Build your house on the firm foundation…not sand.
2. Both houses in this scripture appear the same, that is until the storm came.
Storms come, the winds blow, the water rises, will the ground beneath your house give way?
Have you built on the Rock, or mere sand?
c. They turned to Jesus who has power and authority.
i. They don’t realize yet, they can still turn to Jesus even though He is not in the boat.
ii. So Jesus shows them, in their time of need, He is there.
1. He is there in your time of need.
2. He is waiting for you to call on Him.
II. Jesus Came to them in their time of need
a. Fourth watch of the night is between 3am – 6am.
b. Jesus walked to them through the middle of the storm.
i. Where Jesus stepped, there was calm.
ii. That is power and authority!
