When Jesus declares Himself as the True Vine, He is not just saying that He is the root, the tree, the trunk, He is everything. This is where our dependence on Him, the True Vine, comes from. He is 'Everything to me'.

Introduction

Who is Jesus? This is a question that people have been asking since his time on earth. It is a question that still lingers today, and each of us must answer it for ourselves. Thankfully, Jesus himself provides the answer. In the Gospel of John, he uses seven "I am" statements to reveal his true identity. One of these statements is "I am the true vine." Let us explore what this means for us.

I. The True Vine (John 15:1-8)

A. Jesus identifies himself as the true vine, emphasizing his authenticity and trustworthiness. In contrast to the failures of Israel and the hypocrisy of religious leaders, Jesus declares himself to be genuine and reliable.

B. Just as a vine is the source of life for its branches, Jesus is the source of life for us. We are completely dependent on him, just as branches rely on the vine for sustenance and growth.

II. The Vine and the Vinedresser (John 15:1-3)

A. Jesus reveals that his Father is the vinedresser, the one who lovingly tends to the vine. God ensures that the vine remains healthy, removing anything that hinders its growth and providing the necessary nutrients and care.

B. The vinedresser also prunes the branches to promote their fruitfulness. Through the application of Scripture, God prunes away unnecessary things in our lives such as pride, envy, and selfishness, allowing us to bear more fruit.

III. The Vine and the Branches (John 15:4-8)

A. Jesus refers to his disciples as the branches connected to him, the true vine. Through his connection with us, his love and protection flow into our lives, enabling us to grow as his followers and bear much fruit.

B. Remaining in Christ is crucial for bearing fruit. To remain means to stay in a constant, unchanging relationship with him. This involves believing in him as the Son of God, receiving him as our Lord and Savior, obeying his teachings, and growing in our faith.

C. The purpose of bearing fruit is twofold: to display the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) within us and to win souls for Christ.

D. By remaining in Christ and bearing fruit, we bring glory to God the Father.

Conclusion

Without Christ, we are powerless and unable to accomplish anything of eternal significance. However, when we remain in him, we experience abundant life and become fruitful disciples. Let us embrace our dependence on Jesus, the true vine, and allow his love and care to flow through us, producing a bountiful harvest of spiritual growth and souls won for his kingdom.
