Understand and embrace Jesus as the Bread of Life, who satisfies not only our physical needs but also our deepest spiritual hunger and thirst.

Introduction

Good morning, brothers and sisters. We're gonna dive into an incredible chapter from the Gospel of John today - Chapter 6, where we encounter Jesus as the Bread of Life. This passage is a remarkable depiction of how Jesus not only tends to our physical needs but also nourishes our spiritual hunger.

Here's what Max Lucado once said, "Bread of Life? Jesus lived up to the title. But an unopened loaf does a person no good. Have you received the bread? Have you received God's forgiveness?." Today, we’re going to be deep-diving into receiving this life giving bread.

Let's read the scripture together, John 6:35,

"And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."

Let's bow our heads as we open in prayer.

Dear Heavenly Father, as we delve into your Word today, open our hearts and minds to fully comprehend the depth of Your love for us. Help us to understand that You are the Bread of Life, our ultimate source of sustenance and satisfaction. May we always seek to satisfy our hunger and quench our thirst in You. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.

Now, let's unpack this scripture together.

The Bread of Life

When Jesus declared Himself as the Bread of Life, He was making a profound statement about His role in our lives. The concept of bread in the Bible is not just about physical sustenance but also carries a deeper spiritual significance. Bread is a staple food, a basic dietary item that sustains life. In the same way, Jesus is essential to our life. He is not an add-on or an optional extra, but the very source of life itself.

Our sustainer: Just as physical bread provides the necessary nutrients for our bodies, Jesus provides what we need for our spiritual survival. He gives us strength when we are weak, comfort when we are in pain, and hope when we are in despair. He is the source of our spiritual vitality, the one who keeps us going when all else fails.

Satisfies our deepest spiritual hunger: In a world where people are constantly seeking satisfaction in wealth, success, relationships, and pleasures, Jesus offers a satisfaction that is far deeper and lasting. He fills the emptiness in our souls that nothing else can fill. He quenches our spiritual thirst with living water, ensuring that we will never be spiritually parched again.

Offers us eternal life: Physical bread can sustain life for a while, but it cannot prevent eventual physical death. However, the bread that Jesus offers brings eternal life. By believing in Him, we are promised a life that transcends physical death, a life that is eternal. This is a profound promise that no one else can make.

Invites us into a relationship with Him: When we partake of physical bread, it becomes a part of us, providing us with energy and vitality. Similarly, when we partake of the Bread of Life, we enter into an intimate relationship with Jesus. He becomes a part of us, and we become a part of Him. This relationship is not just about receiving from Him, but also about living in communion with Him, sharing in His life and His mission.

Experiencing Him in a personal and intimate way: It's about letting Him fill our spiritual hunger, quench our spiritual thirst, and provide us with eternal life.
