Summary: In this chapter, Jesus talks about a midnight friend who shares his three loaves. Jesus is our midnight friend. We can go to our Jesus even at late night. Most of the time, when our friends visit us, we have nothing to offer them.
And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? Luke 11:5-7
In this chapter, Jesus talks about a midnight friend who shares his three loaves. Jesus is our midnight friend. We can go to our Jesus even at late night. Most of the time, when our friends visit us, we have nothing to offer them. These friends arrive with needs(healing), difficulties, and situations for which we have no solutions. So we take these needs to our midnight friend and request for three loaves of bread.
In this chapter, the friend asks his midnight friend for “Three loaves of Bread”. This friend could have asked for five loaves, but he only asks for three. The number three represents the Trinity – a complete God. Three loaves of bread represent a complete understanding and working knowledge of the three members of the Trinity. Three loaves make a complete meal.
Jesus, our midnight friend, will give us the three loaves not because we requested, but because of our persistence Jesus will give the complete knowledge of Trinity. The working knowledge of the Trinity solves all problems, fulfills all promises, meets all needs, and so on. The friend made the right request to the midnight friend. This request has the potential to meet and solve all the needs of the entire Universe. Today, plead with Jesus to give the three loaves of bread—the working knowledge of the Trinity.
Many times in the Bible, people come with specific needs, such as healing or a miracle. Sometimes these miracles satisfy the physical need but do not satisfy the spiritual need. However, when we come to Jesus and ask for a complete working knowledge of the Trinity, this will satisfy both our physical and spiritual needs.
Jesus is our midnight friend. Midnight can even be a particularly difficult or dark hour. He always has three loaves of bread, whether it’s day or night. A person with three loaves at midnight is extremely rare. Sometimes faithful servants of God have the three loaves of bread. But Jesus has the 3 loaves of bread even in the midnight.
Did we ever approach Jesus at midnight (in our dark times) for the sake of others’ needs? A friend in this chapter approached his friend at midnight (who had three loaves) for the needs of others. Three loaves were given to this friend who approached the midnight friend, when he inquired about the needs of others. When we approach Jesus for the needs of others, we may be granted the working knowledge of the Trinity.
Did we ever share our three loaves with others?
Give us our daily bread is the model prayer in the previous verses (Luke 11:1-4). The friend already had his daily bread for a day. However, when his travelling friend arrived, his bread was not sufficient, and additional bread was required. The friend might have shared his bread with him, and when he realized it wasn’t enough, he went to Jesus for additional bread.
Even at midnight, the friend knew where to get the three loaves of bread. Do you know where you’ll get your provisions at midnight or dark times? Even at midnight, we can always go to Jesus. The provisions, while being three loaves, can meet the needs of your complete family and dependents.
Three loaves of bread can also represent the provisions from the three members of the Trinity. When we approach Jesus for the needs of others, we get triune provisions from the storehouses of God. These Triune provisions will completely satisfy your needs while also meeting the needs of others.
Do start taking people in your heart. Allow these people to become a part of your extended family. At some place, you will feel the shortage of provisions in your extended family. Shortage because you need to take care of the needs of an extended family. Then immediately go to your midnight friend (Jesus), who gives you three loaves. Instead of a friendly mode, go in a dependent mode with persistence. You will then experience triune provisions in your extended family.
