Jesus Built Church Pt. 3
Contributed by Stephen Funderburk on Jan 23, 2008 (message contributor)
Summary: knowing what is the most important thing is an important thing
Intro: in a Jesus built church you find people with the right priorities. Their goals, dreams, pursuits all pass through God’s Word, God’s Will, and God’s Way. It is very important to have your priorities in the right place. Tonight our message is:
Knowing what is the most important thing
is an important thing.
Matthew 6:33--seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things will be added unto you.
God comes first, everything else comes next. Tonight, let’s look at how the Word encourages us to have our priorities right.
What you seek first, what you seek most, it really who you are in life. If God is an afterthought, a week-end ritual, you will miss the prize of the high calling in Christ. What you talk about, what you think about, what you watch the most, tells a lot about your priorities.
Joshua 1:8-do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth, meditate on it day and night, so that you will be careful to do everything it says, and your way will be prosperous and successful.
The first way to keep our priorities right is to get all
our instructions from the Word of God.
If we never look at the map, it will be impossible to
reach our destination.
1 John 2:15-16--don’t love the world, for all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life, isn’t of the Father, but is of the world. Here is a simple breakdown of those things that work against our priority of making God first. The lust of the flesh, any wrong desires, the lust of the eyes, any wrong entertainments, the pride of life, striving for success in this world over success in Christ.
Romans 12:2- don’t become conformed to this world to the point that you try to fit in. Here is the next thing that will get our priorities out of line. We are called to be separated unto God, not to try to fit into the worlds goals, ways, desires. In a Jesus Built church you have those who swim against the flow, go against the current.
Hebrews 11:25-choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. The next priority for every believer is that we are willing to suffer for Christ, than enjoy acceptance in this world. This is a real dividing line for many people, they want to have their cake and eat it too. Joshua said, you do what you want to do, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
1 Timothy 4:16- keep a close watch on all you do and think. Stay true to what is right and God will bless you and use you to help others. If you are serious about changing, you are going to have to look and test your values on a regular basis. Keeping the main thing the main thing is a daily commitment. It is easy to get off course or drift.
ill) years ago I went fishing on a pond in Alabama and fell asleep. When I woke up I had drifted to the other side of the pond and was baked like a lobster by the hot sun. There is a valuable lesson here, if you snooze you loose.
close: making changes is a difficult thing, especially the longer you have been set on a particular course. For those who have been doing the Daniel fast, no sugars, breads, desserts, meats, cokes, it is a real challenge. But bringing your body, bringing your spirit, bringing your life into subjection is essential in making sure the most important thing is the most important thing.
