Series: Biblical Cities- Jerusalem [#9]

JERUSALEM- COVER UP

Matthew 23:37

Introduction:

We are continuing in our Series about some of the most mentioned Cities in the Bible. Tonight, we are going to study the city that is 1st on the list- Jerusalem. Jerusalem is mentioned 811 times in the Bible. Currently, there are 3 different Religions that consider Jerusalem to be a holy site- Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

Matthew 23:37

Because of Solomon’s sins, the Kingdom of Israel was split. Solomon’s son Rehoboam was the King of the Tribe of Judah and the Tribe of Benjamin- The other 10 Tribes were considered Israel. Rehoboam, (just like his father) worshipped other gods; and it costed the Nation dearly.

2 Chronicles 12:1-8

1. The consequences of sin.

God allowed Judah to remain because of His promise to David; but that did not change the fact that there are consequences to sin. Egypt attacked Judah and captured many cities all the way up to Jerusalem. When you do not follow God, the enemy will take things away from you.

Here is the simple solution to sin- Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord. God decided to deliver them from the enemy; but they became subjects of Egypt. God was teaching them the difference between serving Him and serving other kings.

2 Chronicles 12:9-11

2. The cover up of sin.

King Rehoboam was embarrassed of the loss of the golden shields and instead of acknowledging what happened, he covered up the loss by replacing them with bronze shields that had to be shined up. These gold shields were used in worship of God; and then they were gone. The gold did not have to be shined up; but the bronze did.

When you try to cover up sin in your life, it takes a lot of work to make it look like everything is fine. You can work as hard as you want to make things look like everything is ok; but that does not make it so.
