JERUSALEM- A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT
Introduction:
We are continuing in our Series about the most mentioned City in the Bible- Jerusalem.
A few weeks ago, we learned about using the right words to say. Tonight, we are going to continue with this thought as we ask the question, “What do I do and say when everyone around me is out to get me”?
1. When you are asked a direct question, simply answer with a yes or no.
Often times, Satan is trying to get us to tell him what is going on. We forget that Satan is not the same as God. Satan isn’t all knowing. Satan isn’t all present. Satan doesn’t know what you are thinking. The more we say the more we inform the enemy. Remember that Jesus only answered a few questions with a direct answer and here He answers with a yes. Not only did Jesus answer with a simple yes, He didn’t lie or stretch the truth.
2. When people spew out accusation after accusation, remain silent.
There are many times when people are accusing you of things that there is no good answer. They are trying to lure you into saying something that will make them look right. You can deny the accusations all day long; but it won’t matter because they have already made up their minds. There are some people that prefer drama over truth.
I know that it is instinctive to defend yourself; but what good would it do? Just remember who you are trying to please- God.
3. When people make decisions based on popular demand, remain silent.
It is amazing that this very group of people less than a week before this was shouting, “Hosanna to the King”. It didn’t take them long to change their minds. The reason is- They were going along with crowd each and every time. Being popular is a problem that many face throughout their life. We often are so worried about what others think of us that we will go against everything we believe in order to keep them happy.
When people make decisions that are wrong and against you based upon popular vote- Fighting, arguing, etc… isn’t the answer. Remain silent and trust in the Lord with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
4. When people mock you, remain silent.
Unfortunately, there will always be “bullies”. There has been a huge effort in our communities, schools, etc… to stop bullying; but there will always be someone trying to take advantage of someone. We are not to cower before them; but fighting back isn’t the answer.
Conclusion:
This has been a difficult sermon for me to preach because I have a hard time remaining silent when things are not going like they are supposed to. Now understand that I’m not suggesting that we not speak up for the Lord. I’m not suggesting that we sit around and remain silent about the Gospel. What I am saying is, “When you are in the midst of the enemy and the enemy is trying to draw you into doing the wrong thing, be silent.”
