I. EXORDIUM:
Are you like Jephthah?
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To prove that we no longer need signs, wonders and miracles to convince us as believers, and we need to offer ourselves to GOD as living sacrifice, not someone else's life.
IV. TEXT:
Judges 11:30 (Amplified Bible)
And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, If You will indeed give the Ammonites into my hand,
V. THESIS:
We no longer need signs, wonders and miracles to convince us as believers, and we need to offer ourselves to GOD as living sacrifice, not someone else's life.
VI. TITLE:
Jephthah's accidental pledge
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. Author: unknown, tradition attributes the authorship to Samuel
B. Date written: 1086 - 1035 B.C.
C. Purpose: To preview Israel's history following the conquest and prior to the monarchy.
D. To whom written: Nation of Israel
E. Keyword: apostasy
F. Key verse: Judges 17:6 (Amplified Bible)
In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. Given as exchange of victory
"And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said"
Judges 11:11 (New International Version)
So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.
Funny thing about Jephthah is he repeated his words to GOD, not GOD's Words to GOD.
Jeremiah 1:12 (New International Version)
The Lord said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled."
GOD guaranteed His Words long time ago, but GOD will not guarantee men's words. It's GOD Promises that we lived by not another man's.
He trusted in man and trusted in himself to defeat the enemies, when he comes to GOD, he approached GOD with doubt and still GOD's Words are not enough for him, and still needed signs to please himself.
B. He offered another instead of himself
1. Because of this mistake, he can't change it, his daughter died because of his own hands, a tragic death to die.
Instead of saying, Here I am LORD, I offer you my life. He offered another, what a coward.
Romans 12:1 (Amplified Bible)
I APPEAL to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.
and who told Jephthah, sacrifices needed to be killed, well, he acts like an unbeliever still.
1 Corinthians 14:22 (New International Version)
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.
He doesn't need to drop a promise to GOD for GOD already fulfilled His vows to Him, all He can do is follow GOD and dedicate His life to Him.
IX. CONCLUSION:
He ended up suffering for the death of his own daughter. In our time, the LORD JESUS CHRIST is enough sign for us, we no longer need to crucify our own selves in the cross just to please GOD, the LORD JESUS CHRIST did it all for us.
