GENESIS 22:1-19 IN THE MOUNT OF THE LORD IT SHALL BE SEEN
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah jireh: as it is said to this day,
In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
1. THE PERCEPTION OF ABRAHAM.
1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
A. His Relationship – Abraham knew the Lord.
It was:- Personal, Powerful, Pivotal.
B. His Readiness – As soon as God speaks, Abraham responds.
IT WAS INTELLIGENT OBEDIENCE.
IT WAS INTENTIONAL OBEDIENCE
IT WAS IMMEDIATE OBEDIENCE .
C. His Revelation – God revealed His plan for Abraham’s life.
Gen 18:17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
▪ Note How God Defines His Commands
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest
No Mystery, No Mistake, No Misunderstanding.
Isa 30:21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
▪ Note How God Details His Command
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
God speaks of:- The Person (Isaac), The Period (now), The Place (Calvary)
The Purpose (Offering) Catherine Luther - God wouldn't do that. - HE DID.
▪ Note How God Darkens His Command - God does not explain the "why?" to men!
2. THE PREPARATION OF ABRAHAM.
A. His Hands were prepared
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
There is an urgency to the commands of God.
Blind Bartimaeus, - And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.
B. His Head was prepared
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
Abraham had three days and three nights to think about what was about to happen.
HIS FUTURE was at stake, HIS FAMILY was at stake, HIS FAITH was at stake.
2 Cors 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
C. His Heart was prepared
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
He would give:- concously, confidently, completely.
Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
3. THE PARTICIPATION OF ABRAHAM. (VS.6-14)
A. This Participation was Personal
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
B. This Participation was Profound
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
He gave up everything he had longed for, lived for and loved at the command of God!
C. This Participation was Profitable (vs. 11-14)
It gave God the opportunity to bless.
4. THE PROMOTION OF ABRAHAM.
1. His Reception Of God’s Praise
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
2. His Recognition Of God’s Provision
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
