Summary: A sermon about the power of God
It’s not the size of the Dog
Exodus 12:4
Mark Twain is credited with saying: "It’s not the size of the dog in the
fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog."
How was David able to challenge his giant 1 Sam 17:31-37
A. He had the right Attitude (v. 26, 36)
2Chr 20:15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of
Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the
LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of
this great multitude; for the battle [is] not yours, but God's.
Sometimes we probably feel like the man whose grandchildren played a practical joke on him. Each afternoon, Grandpa would lie down for a nap. One day, the kids decided to put limburger cheese in his moustache.
Quite soon afterward, he awoke sniffing. "This room stinks," he exclaimed as he got up and went out into the kitchen. He wasn't there long before he declared, "This kitchen stinks, too."
He decided to walk outdoors for a breath of fresh air. Much to Grandpa's surprise, the open air brought no relief, and he proclaimed, "The whole world stinks!" The truth was it was Grandpa who stunk
B. He had the right Angle (v. 37)
It’s all in how you look at it
Some problems depend on your perspective. This past week I read about a college student that sent a letter home to her parents from college.
Dear Mom and Dad,
I’m sorry to be so long in writing. Unfortunately, all my stationery was destroyed the night our dorm was set on fire by demonstrators. I’m out of the hospital now, and the doctors say my eyesight should return, sooner or later. The wonderful boy, Bill, who rescued me from the fire, kindly offered to share his little apartment with me until the dorm is rebuilt. He comes from a good family, so you won’t be surprised when I tell you we’re going to be married. In fact, since you’ve always wanted a grandchild, you’ll be glad to know that you’ll be grandparents next month.
P.S. Please disregard the above practice in English composition. There was no fire, I haven’t been in the hospital, I’m not pregnant, and I don’t even have a steady boyfriend. But I did get a D I French and an F in Chemistry, and I just wanted to be sure you received this news in the proper perspective.
Perspective does make a difference.
Phil 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit,
and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
C. He had the right Ammunition (v. 38-40, 45)
Eph 6: 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the
power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God,
that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high
places 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God,
that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having
done all, to stand.6 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt
about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of
peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye
shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And
take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which
is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and
supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all
perseverance and supplication for all saints;
D. He had the right Aim (v. 46-47) motive
An elderly man on the beach found a magic lamp. He picked it up and a genie appeared. "Because you have freed me," the genie said, "I will grant you a wish." The man thought for a moment and then responded, "My brother and I had a fight 30 years ago and he hasn’t spoken to me since. I wish that he’ll finally forgive me."
There was a thunderclap, and the genie declared, "Your wish has been granted. You know," the genie continued, "most men would have asked for wealth or fame. But you only wanted the love of your brother. Is it because you are old and dying?" "No way!" the man cried. "But my brother is, and he’s worth about $60 million."
2 Tim 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a
vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s
use, and prepared unto every good work.
