John 5:36 (KJV) But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that

the Father hath sent me.

AND THEN WHEN YOU GO TO THE

John 17:4 (KJV) I have glorified thee on the earth: I have

finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

Jesus affirmed that he had brought glory to the Father on earth by doing everything God wanted him to do.

The last phase of Jesus’ revealing work was about to be accomplished through his death on the cross.

Jesus spoke of his work as though it had already happened—

His obedience to death on the cross was a certainty.

Up Until this time, a complicated system of sacrifices had atoned for sins.

Because you do know that

Sin separates people from God,

and only through the sacrifice of an animal, a substitute, could people be forgiven and become clean before God.

. Jesus, however, became the final and ultimate sacrifice for sin.

The word finished is the same as “paid in full.”

Jesus came to finish God’s work of salvation to pay the full penalty for our sins.

With his death, the complex sacrificial system ended because

Jesus took all sin upon himself. Now we can freely approach God because of what Jesus did for us.
