INDESCRIBABLE

PS 19:1-6

ILL- There are few things in life that are beyond description. It’s hard to describe to you what it was like being in the delivery room when my daughter was born. That is one of life’s indescribable moments. Until you experience something as beautiful and wonderful as that first hand, words fall so short of what the actual moment is like.

We may call moments in life like that- indescribable, but the Author of Life is defined as indescribable. Tonight I want us to consider the greatness of God.

I know two things about God: there is a God and I’m not Him.

Most of the problems we face in life, perhaps even all of them, are the result of a distorted view of God. Our view of God has a huge impact on our lives. What is your view of God? How big is your God?

Everyone has some kind of perception of God - the atheist, the skeptic, the Christian.

Christians have worked very hard to understand and explain God. We have theological seminaries, Bible colleges, Christian bookstores and the list goes on and on.

Even with all this knowledge, we have barely scratched the surface of understanding how great God is:

How does a limited mind understand an unlimited God, who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent?

How does a finite, temporary being understand an infinite and eternal being?

How does that which has a birth and a death comprehend that which has no beginning and no end?

The more we think we know about God, the more we realize we don’t know about Him

When I graduated from Seminary I had two strong feelings. I know so much more about the Bible and at the same time, I know so little about the Bible. We can’t put God is box. If we could understand everything there is to know about God, we would be God!

The Bible says the greatness of God is demonstrated in the wonder of His creation around us

II. THE WONDER OF CREATION

A. God’s purpose for the wonder of creation is to give us proof that He exists

-Rom 1:20 (NLT) “From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities-- his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God”

King David was moved by observing that the heavens, under the dominating influence of the sun, declare the splendor of God’s handiwork.

-Ps 19:1-4 (NLT) “The heavens tell of the glory of God. The skies display his marvelous craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or a word; their voice is silent in the skies; yet their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to all the world.”

Have you ever thought about how the earth is perfectly positioned to sustain life? The earth is close enough to the sun to keep us warm, but not too close, so that life could not exist, or too far away making it too cold for life to exist.

Have you ever thought about how amazing it is, that in all of the known universe, our planet is the only one with life?

Genesis 1:16 says “God made two great lights- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.”

ILL- There have only been a handful of times in my life when I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the majesty of God. The first was when I was 16 years old at a Young Life camp in Colorado. It was late a night and I was sitting outside, my back leaning on a tree, the stars bright and close. Marveling at His creation and considering the cross of Christ, I was overwhelmed by God. That was a night I’ll never forget. In 1991, I had the privilege to go to Israel for 3 weeks of study. I’ll never forget sitting on top of a building in Jerusalem, watching the stars, listening to a song by Margret Becker called “Who am I”

B. Man has used creation to try to show that God does not exists, but the fact is that without God man is unable to fully comprehend or explain the universe

-Eccl 3:11 (NLT) “God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

-Eccl 8:17 (NLT) “This reminded me that no one can discover everything God has created in our world, no matter how hard they work at it. Not even the wisest people know everything, even if they say they do.”
