IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME

I. WE SHOULD LOOK BACK AND REMEMBER

A. His Death

1. Death of a loved one.

a. Usually we want to forget the death of a loved one.

b. Usually we want to forget how a loved one died.

2. The Death of the Son of God.

a. Jesus wants His followers to remember His death.

(1) Everything we have as Christians centers around His death.

(2) It is central to the Gospel message.

(3) We are not saved by His life. We are saved by His death.

b. Jesus wants His followers to remember why He died.

(1) He died for our sins.

I Corinthians 15:3 “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;”

(2) He was our substitute.

Isaiah 53:4 “Surely he hath born our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for

our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

(3) He paid a debt we could not pay.

I Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”

c. Jesus wants His follows to remember how He died. (He was broken.)

(1) Willingly

John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

(2) Meekly

Isaiah 53:7 “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his

mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.”

B. His Resurrection

Romans 1:4 “And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the

spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:”

Romans 6:5 “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we

shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:”

I Corinthians 15:20 “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

C. “Remembering” is not simply the recalling of historical facts. It is a participation in spiritual realities. We have fellowship with a living Savior. Warren Wiersbe

II. WE SHOULD LOOK AHEAD

“ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.”

A. The return of Jesus is the blessed hope.

B. He is coming again.

I Thessalonians 4:16 “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain

shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in

the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 4:18 Wherefore

comfort one another with these words.”

C. We shall be like Him.

I John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”

III. WE SHOULD LOOK WITHIN

A. Paul Condemns

1. Cliques

2. Classes

3. Drunkeness

4. Irreverently (Disrespectfully)

B. Paul Exhorts

1. Commonality

2. Sobriety

3. Gravity (Seriousness)

a. Not that we are worthy.

b. But in a worthy manner.

4. Sanctity (Sacredness)

a. Not religious detectives.

b. Examine oneself
